I was wondering when I saw the news on the web, how will a PCIE slot deliver so much power ?! I turns out that it can't deliver 300 W, lol :P

Shocking!

Would be nice to bump it to 100W, GPUs are getting less and less demanding. What would be even nicer (and easier) though is to solder connectors in a different location on the GPU boards. Right now they all have them in a rough spot if you care about a clean build. Even if you route cables for miles you still have to plug cables around the middle of your system, that is always bad aesthetically imho. Maybe mobos could even have a small hole at the end of the PCIEx16 slots to route aux cables behind the board?

Thank you for correcting that info Hilbert although an increase in pci-e is welcomed, oh and thanks for the bread crupms..that lightning looks good 🤓

Yes. Having the connectors where they are right now might be handy for accessibility without having to remove the card, but having to route the cables away from the back wall and around the card isn't nice for airflow or aesthetics for sure.

That's the GTX 980Ti Lightning. 🙂

Thank you for clearing that one:)

I just pointed it before anyone thinks otherwise. That could escalated real quick in the interweb. :P

What're "supplemental power connectors" supposed to be? Surely it's not referring to the power coming from the PSU directly? There's no reason why that couldn't be 2MW if somebody wanted a laser cannon inside their computer case. Neither the mobo nor the PCIe would know nothing of it. Yet it seems strange the mobo would have another power connector somehow connected to the video card if needed, but I guess it's not impossible, just not overly compatible with older mobos.

Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay 🙂 Thanks for clearing that one up Hilbert. The Internet was starting to go all loony....

Yeah, sorry I didn't mean to confuse. It has three 8-pin power connectors hence I used it in the news-item as reference material. That was not a mysterious 'future' lightning or anything.

Makes no sense to increase the power through the PCIE connector. This would take graphics cards backwards. Nvidia, AMD, and even Intel have made strides towards lower power more efficient GPU's for years now and with the likes of the 750Ti and the 950 not even needing a power connector but still being powerful enough to run games decently is a massive thing. Remember the days when someone would ask you "I want to upgrade PC's graphics, I brought the PC off the shelf from a supermarket" and you go.... "oh dear lord, your gonna need a new PSU first" and they look at you like you just told them the Illuminati was real.

Home-built rig with fricken "laser" beams.

Pushing 4x300 Watt through the Motherboard Traces in 4-Way SLI/CrossFire would be quite a challenge ^^

hahah this better then over used "its over 9000" then again anything vegeta did or say was hilarious it always ends with that decisions causing the crap to the hit the fan :wanker: anyway on topic, I knew it was to good to be true to see the end of extra power cables of pci-e devices/gpus I bet this will result in 3rd 6/8pin connector on them :bang:

SLI is pretty much dying. Will probably be gone in a few years.
I wouldn't bet on that. SLI in the form of explicit multi-adapter, yes. The mix and match type is going to more or less explode in the coming 5 years.

300 Watts over PCIe would be an overkill for motherboards. It looked too good to be true 🙂

again Thank you Hilbert for correcting the info on the new PCI-E standard and and explaining what the pic is all about 🙂

It would still have been nice if they had increased it to at least 100w or something this way the low end would have a bigger window before needing a connector.
