Mini-LED is great for the quality of the average TV set, but unfortunately it still requires FALD, it has halo effects and worse viewing angles. But it should be much better than what we have now on the mainstream.

I don't get it. Why do these still require a FALD panel on top of the MiniLED panel? Isn't the "MiniLED panel + RGB front penel" nearly equivalent to an OLED panel?

It was an exciting moment, but the 8-Series couldn’t quite be called an OLED-killer. Off-angle viewing seemed to suffer, its excellent black areas still had a slightly perceptible halo-effect near bright areas of the screen, and then there’s the question of price: The 8-Series 65-inch model was only $100 less than LG’s comparably-sized C9 OLED TV. [...] It’s unlikely that even a mini-LED version of the 6-Series would equal OLED in terms of all of its outstanding picture qualities, but if it comes close — as we suspect it will — it will still be a game-changer in 4K HDR bang-for-the-buck value. The problem is that the price is close to OLED, but the image quality isn't (yet). If they manage to drop it significantly, then it would be nice for budget builds.

This has been my dilemma on the next TV in my living room. The room is very bright so reflections are an issue and I'm not blacking it out with curtains. OLED's currently are all glossy with only OK reflection handling and Samsung's LED(I refuse to call them QLED as that is misleading nonsense) have the best reflection handing than any TV maker. A Samsung TV with mini-led backlightnig may be a pretty good compromise.

Its not ready but it is close. Most articles I have seen suggest its 2-3 years off. Samsung had prototypes at CES this year but I suspect getting mass production stepped up in a cost effective way is taking time.

I don't fully understand the reason to invest in mini LED displays. Micro LED is the future IMO - all the advantages of OLED without the burn-in issue. And no, they're not the same thing. I'm hoping that when a reasonably-priced 4K-capable GPU is released, I can get a 4K uLED display to go along with it. On the other hand, now that Samsung is ditching LCD production and going all-in with OLED, perhaps they'll be able to minimize the burn-in effect to the point where it's not an issue. They are making more progress every year.

All new technology is expensive to begin with. I understand uLED isn't yet ready for mass production, but that's why I'm not expecting to get such a display in maybe 2 or 3 years, because I predict it's going to take that long until 4K gaming can be done for a reasonable price. I'm usually not willing to spend a lot on new tech, but uLED is one of the few cases where I think I would, because as long as the LEDs don't degrade (at least at uneven rates), I don't know if I'd ever get rid of the display. I would definitely prefer to see the results before I invest in one but nowadays, you can't charge $700+ for a consumer-grade display and make noticeable compromises. You can get very nice LCDs for crazy low prices these days, so there's no room for a more expensive product to have inferior visual quality.

They sell more TV's with "mini-LED". Many folk buy TV's like PC components. They will upgrade. LED>OLED>Mini>Micro.... etc...

Naming is really confusing. MiniLED is just LCD with FALD at much bigger scale, thousands backlight LEDs instead of few (100 - 800). But what is microLED? It should be RGB LED for each pixel. In other words OLED where O (organic) is replaced with non-organic LED, one we already use. But some manufacturers think also of FALD with 100,000s LEDs what is completely different. This is still LCD. And miniLED MUST be called miniLED LCD!

MiniLED is hundreds of LEDs instead of Tenths. There is no "thousands" yet. Common FALD barely have 8x6 arrays or less ( some just 6 x 4 ). Basically useless. MiniLED allows 32x24 ( 768 ) array, so the bloom area is much much smaller and less noticeable. Some really high-end have 64x32 ( 2048 ), but that's only for studio mastering monitors.... in the price of thousands or tens of thousands of $. The hope is to bring those 48-64 by 24-32 arrays to a more reasonable price level. 100000 miniLED ? Nah, no chance in hell. That's already microLED territory.

monitor market today feels like pre-ryzen cpu market, milking LCD like there's no tomorrow, for the price of a decent HDR monitor you could get a 4k 120hz freesync OLED tv twice the size, and being OLED even the worst HDR implementation is infinitely better than those worthless HDR400-600 lcd models, lots of people even considering getting a huge tv instead of a monitor because of how bad the monitors are in comparison perhaps LG feels compelled to answer samsung's latest G7-9 stuff with OLED monitors, one can hope...

@fry178 Maybe my knowledge is outdated, haven't checked this things in two years since I bought my OLED TV. If the number increased so much in the last two years and LED count is now in the hundreds and soon maybe thousands, that is good news !
