Can't something like this be done today already? Just... not with OLED?

OLED does not require a backlight, as it's its own light source. Yes, it can be done today, but only with edge lighting, and it would look terrible and washed out. Almost every other panel (TN/IPS/-VA,...) needs to have light routed to behind the pixels, which sort of means you can't have it see through.

I more meant with a backwards projected imagine onto the screen, a beamer in the back so to say, but there is a lightning issue there I agree.

Best of luck if you have an animal - broken pixels will be the least of your worries.

Yes and no - you can basically do the inverse of this. If you take an LCD panel, strip off all the backlights, filters, polarizers, diffusors, etc so you have nothing but a bare LCD, you can create a totally transparent display that shows color images. But, the downside of doing this is some colors might appear a little washed out and it's blocking light. Panasonic's display is creating light of specific colors, which depending on your application, could yield better results. EDIT: It's worth pointing out that an LCD projector can produce a similar result to this transparent OLED display, but it takes a hell of a lot more energy and preparation to do so, and would be big and clunky. EDIT2: I also just realized - whether you go with the LCD approach I just mentioned or this transparent OLED display, you could sandwich a couple dozen of these displays together and maybe render a literally 3D object within them, where you can take the display and view it from any angle and see the dimensions of the object. That would be especially interesting since you could also animate the object. Of course it wouldn't be a very impressive rendering since the "Z axis" pixels would be so sparse and thick, but still a really cool effect. I might try building this myself...

to me the design is very poor, i like the tech at least
