And what would you do mith less then 16gb of ramdisk? You do realise the more ram you take away for ramdisk the less ram memory you have, almost leaving you without options. You could have 8gigs of ram and same of ramdisk, but uhat would be basically useless. P.s. Apu doesnt have enough horsepower for any newer decent titles so dont bother. What you wrote would work but there isnt any use for it really. . .

This just isn't true. You wont be maxing anything but older titles out on current desktop available APU's, but they can definitely run newer titles with 30-40 + FPS on low-medium settings. You seem to forget that not everyone aims to have huge amounts of eye candy. The people who aim for APU builds are generally casual gamers that sit on their couches with a gamepad. I built a 5800k system for my brother a few months back and it manages just fine.

I know they don't, this is just a concept and i was interested what do you guys think about it. I personally would never go for APU even for budget build (little to no upgradability). But well 😀

Nothing wrong with AMD cards. So stop that flame-baiting right now, second time I've seen you do it and you haven't been on the forum for five minutes. Your concept wouldn't work paticularly well, from a financial or performance standpoint. Better to get a balanced system built around a dedicated graphics solution.

Of course, I know Radeons are okay graphic cards. Personal prefference man 🙂 See that:

? And yeah. I know this wouldnt work from financial stand point, just was curious about performance, but i guess the perf. gains would be negligible. 😀

Well Dravic you don't know much what your talking about, about APU's and ramdisk. APU'S work VERY VERY well! And for as APU's and ramdisk your comparing apples to oranges! Like this!!!! Apple #1 HDD and/or SSD verses apple #2 ramdisk. Ramdisk kicks apple #1 (HDD and/or SSD) ass. Drives being HDD or SSD is still the weakest link to overall speed ( read & write time ).

I know it's like comparing 400mb write/save SSD to 4gb write/save ramdisk 🙂 But how much could it help when using APU, is the question. SSD is only used here as a place to store RAMDISK data (when closing and opening system)

SSD provides no benefit outside of read/write speed. They don't increase the performance of the processor/graphics in any way. They simply remove the bottleneck that mechanical harddrives have become. A Ramdisk is rather pointless. You're better off disabling the pagefile.

A Ramdisk is rather pointless!????? LMAO on that one

For a gaming system he's spot on.

APUs are "perfect" for the daily user. You can do all the facebooking you want. You can watch full-screen 1080p+ netflix. (If you're not gaming recent titles, this is as intense as it gets.) The only thing you can't do is play the latest titles at high graphics. (Quake live, World of Tanks, LoL, that stuff runs fine. Only recent AAA titles are an issue.). I highly recommend an APU for anyone that isn't a gamer. A10 6800k ($150) 85 series mobo with vga/hdmi/dual-link DVI (3x monitor support). ($75) 8gb ram ($60) 120 gig ssd for OS ($100) 1tb hdd ($65) cheap whatever case ($25) 500w psu ($40) dvd-rw ($20) ----- Roughly $535 Add an OS and you're at ~$635 That will buy you a nice machine that will start fast and do everything [non-gaming] you want to do fast. Seriously. I love these things. They're exactly what "family friends" (i.e. My parent's friends) need when they ask for a 'cheap good computer'. Best part, if their kids later want to play 'real' games on them, just drop-in a mid-range GPU, and you've converted it to a pretty decent mid-settings gaming machine for the non-srs-bzns gamer. OP << check out this mobo : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128572 It's got a lot of connectivity. I used it in a build, and it worked well. -scheherazade

It's pointless if you already have an SSD. In practice a Ramdisk won't load any faster than an SSD given the bottleneck shifts from storage performance to waiting on the CPU/Graphics card to keep up. So yeah, it's pointless for most of us.

He's right.

Another moment: ramdisk will compete with APU`s videocard because both use system memory.
https://forums.guru3d.com/data/avatars/m/250/250756.jpg
And why do you think I asked about 16GB or more setup? 🙂

I was talking not about amount of memory, but about memory channels. Every ramdisk`s read/write operation should slowdown videocard`s operation with frame buffer and vice versa.

What exactly are you going to use a Ramdisk for? In days long past, we could easily run an OS from a Ramdisk. That's not the case with Windows anymore, unless you're running 64GB of ram. The most common use of a Ramdisk now is for the pagefile, which is pointless as you can more easily disable the pagefile and force the OS to make use of the installed ram. The other common use of a Ramdisk is for browser cache. Since most browsers can be configured to clear cache on closing, that's rather pointless as well. Also, see mbk1969's statement in post #16... There's really no practical use for a Ramdisk these days aside from loading portable OSes.

And access time.. 😉

Well, there is Photoshop/Premiere/AE Cache, as well as being a scratch disk for pretty much anything that requires it is typically a good idea since they will literally chew through your SSD. Another good idea was for applications that require fast and frequent R/W, such as a Minecraft server I hosted before, when there were multiple players, a HDD just wasn't fast enough, and I didn't want to sacrifice SSD write cycles for it, thus the RAMDisk was a good choice. Then there are always VMs. But, you really need 16GB++. While there aren't that many uses anymore, its still applicable to some. However, it is really for the minority and not the general end user. It will however, not help at all with your CPU/GPU performance, and may in fact lower it because you may potentially be saturating the memory bandwidth, which APUs desperately need. APUs aren't a bad deal at all, I have one and it works extremely well for the tasks I give it. Just remember when getting an APU that its cheap for a reason (very weak CPU performance), but it excels at its price point and purpose.
