They wanted to make money out of it , and openmw and iodoom3 are free ?

Looking past the industry-standard platitude BS that comes out of PR mouths, it seems these people were actually working with squenix and had some sort of falling out that nobody wants to talk about. Probably under NDA and if they say something, squenix is going to sue them out of existence.

Ah, yeah that's a good point. But yeah, most open-source cloned games are free. The caveat is the game resources (textures, audio, models, etc) aren't free; they require the original game for that.

Yes, as I gather they are free to release their work as a game mod--paid or otherwise--anytime they'd like. Licenses to use IP are often very liberal so long as the licensee doesn't intend to go commercial and use the other guy's IP to make a buck. That tends to be where they often draw the line, imo.

These look too good to be just some mods made by some modders in their spare time, the modded games look very professional indeed, was SE helping them in any way with these mods?
