It's a nice piece of tech, but the price is too high in an already crowded market. Plus, why would anyone want this over a Vita or 3DS?

Does anyone actually want one of these things? It's like a 1st generation 3g videophone made by NEC lol. Remember that giant clamshell piece of rubbish they sold when 3g launched. http://www.liquidsilver.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/e808.jpg
No, I think it's really stupid. Then again, we are in a forum where most of us drop $300 on a graphics card and call it mid-high range.

Maybe because there are so few games for the vita and 3DS offers nothing new? An open and powerfull android gaming console with good options for streaming could be appealing. Hell, it's cheaper than an OpenPandora but can do much more.

It's going to be competing with smartphones and tablets.

I'll just wait for a tegra 4 tablet, and a bluetooth mini gamepad.

Yeah...you can also install epsxe and voila, portable PS1 with a proper gamepad. Of course it's not a device that most people wanted, but the idea, for me, is rather sound. Especially when smartphones are getting beefier SOCs, which leads to a more graphically intensive games that's rarely playable with a virtual d-pad. Also, Google Play now has an integrated cloud saves and achievements; some devs already implement those in their games.

This looks like a great toy to have if you have loads of money in the bank to burn, but not so great for the average user. They´re late to the party in my opinion and i speak for myself, as a owner of an asus nexus 7, that i can´t find a solid reason to buy this thing.

I think most people don't understand the idea of this device. Lets say you are a PC gamer and an adult. Most probably your wife/GF will not want your PC to be right next to your TV in the living room. So how do you play your games on the TV with all the comfort of a console when she is not around? -> you get this device and voila, you can play your game on the TV or you can take it to toilet or whateva depending on how crazy you are. I have to say the price could be more interesting but I think that Nvidia should try and bundle these with high end graphics cards since enthusiasts will be the first to show interest in it. Dont have the money to get it but would love one!

I thought the pc only streams to the shield device, not to your TV ?

First time I saw it I thought the same and couldn't see the logic and market where it would sell. But when you read carefully you will see I am right. Now one question remains. Can it stream 3D content? Cause if yes then I will consider buying it. Am not a couch player and am a console hater but I wouldn't mind playing a few games on my big 3D telly without the need to bring my heavy rig to the living room..

If I had a lot of money to blow I would totaly get this. As a kid I was crazy after gaming handhelds like the gameboys, so this would be a huge nerdgasm. I also dislike tablets/smartphones...

yeah, and those have only touchscreen controls and you need to buy an external controller if you want to decently control your games. So far, only very few games have decent touchscreen controls, and most of the times these aren't the most advanced games. Most of the times, touchscreen controls are incredibly crappy compared to a physical controller. This device threads the middle ground between android games, emulators and pc gaming. I would have gotten an Openpandora if it weren't for the price. This device might be right for me.
