Sweet. This box is one of the best buys I've done the last few years.

Worst streaming box I've ever purchased. Was going to start a digital library using Google Play Movies for my movie watching, unfortunately it doesn't pass ARC through HDMI so no 5.1/7.1/ATMO's support so there goes my 11.2 sound setup as the first few movies I purchased stated 5.1 or the (0) symbol for Atmos. Was greeted with Stereo sound... Netflix though worked at 5.1 so that was alright. Its a limitation from Google supposedly, if the shield had an optical out I could get ATMOS but of course it does not.... Bought an Apple TV at half the prices, works like a charm for Netflix and a Digital Library. Then there's the remote issues where you are unable to update the remote which NVIDIA hasn't figured out yet. Just check their forums, its a nightmare. Still have the Shield Pro but it sits on my desk and collects dust.

Wanted to get a Shield myself to replace my Mede8er MED500X. But it lacks an Optical Out and my Logitech Harmony 650 isn't compatible. Instead i patched up my MED500X with a silent 2,5 Inch HDD, new Thermal Paste and a Fan Controlled Noctua 40 MM Fan. I will keep it for some more years as x264 MKVs will be around for a while.

This is great news. They also released a hotfix for some of the HDR issues not that long ago. It will be nice when in a few years all of this HDR stuff gets sorted and support will finally work out of the box with every device that supports it. Guess it's the price us early adopters/beta testers pay

I'm curious to why you don't just connect your shield directly to your receiver?

That's exactly how I have it setup, 27Gbps HDMI to the receiver, 27Gbps receiver to the projector. But like I said, it can't pass ARC through HDMI, its well documented. So if you want to use a Digital Library ala Google Play Movies you will be stuck with Stereo sound or 2.1 audio. You need to make sure that this symbol: ( 0 ) Is present in the media description before purchase otherwise its a 50/50 chance of working. Otherwise its not a bad set top box for things like Netflix, or meida streaming. Those things will work fine with 5.1/7.1 and Atmos, just not the google play movies and other software that doesn't support ARC. Anything that's andriod base will have the issue as Google doesn't support DD/DD+/ARC so you are pretty much screwed. Otherwise use another service besides Google Play but there aren't may out there, pretty much its Itunes, Google Play and Amazon.

I own the 2015 16 GB model.I upgraded it with official dev firmwares (rooted) from KitKat to Lollipop to Nougat and now Oreo is coming.IMPRESSIVE support. The 2015 device is so ahead of competition that the only change made in 2017 model is a new gamepad (original is awful...), new remote (i prefer the older), LESS ports and no IR (?!¿), base hardware is the same. His Tegra X1 SoC is so powerful that an underclocked version is used for Nintendo Switch.

whilst a the new Android OS is fantastic, i WISH they would allow you to install any android app you wanted. there are a number of games i still have to play on my phone because nvidia have locked down the appstore on the shield.

You can allow installation from 3rd party sources in the security options just like any Android phone. I installed a few apps that way.

It's not evil Nvidia locking your favorite apps...It's google play store only allowing you to install Android TV apps on an Android TV device. Enable Unknow sources in settings and install Aptoide TV alternative store app. There you have all the Android TV/phone/tablet apps you want, get ready to use an attached or BT mouse for phone apps. Install a rotation lock app too to block landscape view mode in only portrait view apps.

I use the Sideloader app to load non-tv apps. I then download the .apk from whatever app I want with ES File Explorer. I use a bluetooth keyboard though, it would be very tedious to do with controller 🙂 I will try Aptoide next time, sounds pretty good

Unninstal es explorer from your Shield TV s soon as possible! It's a well know source of problems on this device (network and storage). X-plore file manager is the way to go on Shield TV: 2 panels , complete remote UI suport AND his own LAN (FTP/SMB/NFS/ect) network support.

I don't understand what Audio Return Channel has to do with anything? Why would you want to return audio back to your Nvidia Shield TV?

Yeah I have the same setup, Shield TV -> Marantz 5011 -> TV and I get 5.1 fine out of Google Play Movies - I don't get HDR/4K through, which kind of pisses me off because it allows you to purchase 4K/HDR movies for added cost but makes no mention that GPM on Shield doesn't support 4K output. Edit: https://9to5google.com/2017/04/24/nvidia-shield-tv-4k-play-movies/ Nvm, apparently I didn't realize that they enabled this last year lol

Hmm thats odd, my Shield TV is connected to my Sony amp via ARC, and i use Kodi, and this passes audio through no problem (atmos, DTS-HD, TrueHD). Works for Netflix etc as expected too. This isn't using Google Play movies though, my home library is stored on unRAID

Hmm was not aware of that. Haven't had any issues but I'll look into it.
