Great..yet more proprietary 'only works with Nvidia VR' crap incoming. I have Nvidia cards but I basically despise their attitude of closed software on the supposedly open PC.

My god would you quit your moaning. There is only one feature that doesn't work on other GPU's and that is TXAA. EVERYTHING else works on AMD. Hairworks, Physx (Borderlands physx works), HBAO+ etc all work on AMD hardware. As is optimisation, you honestly can't expect another company to give it's rival access to it's source code.

This market needs more competition, curious to see the stats on NV's version. So far I'm liking HTC/Valves solution.

I read an article a while ago that Nvidia also have tech that increases vr performance by a massive amount by rendering the edges of the image in lower res, can't for the life of me find the link now but it supposedly increases rendering performance by a large margin without a noticeable reduction in image quality. Hopefully they will allow it to work on headsets other than their own too...

This it? “We’re going to cut down the resolution [at those edges], we’re going to cut down the scaling, and effectively use fewer pixels,” says Peterson. http://www.pcworld.com/article/2926083/nvidias-radical-multi-resolution-shading-tech-could-help-vr-reach-the-masses.html

Different article but yeah, that's the thing! Edit: oh wait, I think that is the same article lol

Luckily this tech will be available to every VR headset, depending on if the game uses it, through GameWorks VR, which was recently announced together with the "Multi-Res scaling" (which is the feature you are referring to). Reads as if it needs Maxwell2 though, but if you want proper VR, you probably want a recent high-end GPU anyway, since any stutter is going to kill immersion.

I'm glad nvidia's making one. I was going to buy an oculus till Facebook bought them. I don't need Facebook game request and advertisements popping up while I'm immersed in a game

Hopefully, nVidia will wait and see if this fad will have legs. I don't think it will, personally, for many reasons--will probably be slightly less popular than the stereoscopic-glasses fad...for many of the same reasons & a few more. I expect Oculus to go precisely nowhere fast. (Hey, Zuckerman, I've got some swampland in Alaska I'll sell you for a lot less than $2B...just PM me here and after we agree on terms I'll send you the Official Photochopped Deed of Trust to the property! Why not? After all, it isn't your money, is it, Z? Easy come, easy go, right?)

Work on Pascal instead... We got so many VR no one will know what to buy when they launch.

The more the merrier.

lol, I just googled part of your post, and added VR to the end "rendering the edges of the image in lower res VR"

Why don`t you buy amd they put out new hardware in a timely manner. 🙂

Define "works". Sure, Physx "works" on AMD hardware, but it isn't GPU accelerated. Also, I think you're forgetting that CUDA (which physx is based on) and G-sync only work on nvidia hardware. You could argue things like SLi and Optimus are nvidia-exclusive too but that's not a fair comparison. And sure, nvidia doesn't need to give away ANYTHING they come up with. But if they expect it to be widely adopted, they can't hog everything to themselves. Stuff like openCL, Freesync, and Havok are more widely accepted technologies simply because they aren't platform-specific. Maybe if nvidia decided to split their resources among their competitors (like what AMD did with Vulkan), they'd get more out of their investment. If you were a developer, what would you rather pick: something that only works on nvidia, or something that works on nvidia, AMD/ATi, intel, and everything else? Nvidia tends to have the better product, but sometimes better isn't always worth it. Anyway, on the note of developers, I think too many competing headsets could be a real PITA for devs if the headset functionality differs too greatly. If nvidia focuses strictly on gaming tablets, then I think they could have a pretty good edge. But if they're expecting to compete with the Rift, Hololens, and Vive, they're a little late.

Anyone know how long you can use this before you want to throw up? All VR tech has this problem, hell, even people who watched Avatar in 3D wanted to throw up before the film ended - although it's hard to tell whether this was due to the film, or wearing the headsets.

Work on Pascal instead...
Pascal is already done, it just recently had its Tape-Out, which is when the chip design is sent to the fabs, and first samples will be built (which alone takes a couple months). They are well on schedule for a mid-2016 release.
We got so many VR no one will know what to buy when they launch.
Thats a good thing, though! Assuming they are supported by a similar set of games, choice in hardware is important, it increases competition and ensures innovation in the future.

Avatar 3D was made in as natural way to human vision as is natural for men to be waken up by kick in testicles. Those effects were just cheap, but that is how movie effects go today. (DoF, Lens Flares, ... Dirt on what? On eye? Or on glass box viewers head is supposed to be in?) That is why much simpler 3D movies like Monsters vs. Aliens or Bolt! which do not apply such effects give more natural and enjoyable experience.

I can use my Oculus DK2 for about an hour before I start getting dizzy. They claim the Oculus CB one model was much better. People who used Valve's VR kit said that it was basically a solved problem. I don't think it will be an issue by the time any of these ship. At least not for 2-3 hours of gameplay at a time.

VR Headset without Virtuix Omni is simply not playable and very unconfortable. If they make a VR Headset they should make a cage under 200$, too. Otherwise its just a porn platform and for watching Porn i don´t need Nvidia Tech, every VR Headset will do this job.
