Looking forward to seeing HFTS and VXAO in more games, those two techs look amazing. Hopefully VXGI will follow too. The performance increase with rigid bodies sounds good, can't wait to try it out. Flow is one I've been looking forward to since they first shown FlameWorks. Hope to see the UE4 GW branch updated soon.

NVIDIA makes source code for select GameWorks libraries available to developers via GitHub. Source code for NVIDIA Volumetric Lighting and NVIDIA's FaceWorks demo is available today. Source code for NVIDIA HairWorks, NVIDIA HBAO+ and NVIDIA WaveWorks will be available soon.
just saying . . . 🙂

Probably the only reason this thread hasn't gotten a dozen flame posts already.

Yeah, you mean The Witcher 3. Where aside from Geralt's hair there was also fur on the animals. Same thing applies to FC4. In RoTR the only hairy thing is Lara's hair. Come now, think by yourself.

Well to be fair, on a 980Ti the performance impact going from Hairworks Geralt Only to Hairworks off is roughly 20%. On the same card in TressFX 3.0 (Pure Hair) it's only 13%. With AMD the impact on Hairworks is even more, closer to like 30-35% (post driver/patches) Where on TressFX it's only 8%. There are other differences though that people don't consider. First is that TressFX is 3.0 is obviously a year newer than the Hairworks in Witcher 3. Second is that TressFX 3.0 was the first one to really offer customizable presets for things like fur and even then Square had to basically take the tech and build their own workflow out of it. Judging by Edios write up of it's implementation into Deus Ex, in general it seems to require a lot of setup time per character. Overall I think TressFX looks and performs better to what we've seen thus far out of Hairworks. Hopefully future variants of Hairworks will improve performance because I really like the fur on some of the animals in Witcher 3.

Excellent decision from Nvidia! Should curb down insanity level within kook community, and let everyone focus on real issues. Think of it like Obama releasing birth certificate

Any chance they might be phasing it down slowly, since it seems that DX12 hardware will have much more similarities between vendors?

In close-ups on Lara you're also only getting up to 30,000 strands, with groups of hairs controlled by master strands instead of having individual hair strands from acting independently. Witcher 3 can have 125,000 strands at close-ups or more depending on what monsters are also on-screen. Riley from CoD:Ghosts had 400-500k fur strands. The wolves in Far Cry 4 have about 315k individual strands of simulated fur.

Btw in rotr its on every game character, just no so pronounced as on Lara. And fc4 had crappy implementation, 2 monkeys had it 3rd and 4th not and it looked crap too. Like furmark ball type of fur. The only really good looking hair from nv was in cod ghosts, but there is was just on a dog -_- although it looks nice though.. but yeah not really fascinated to look at dogs ass to see that purehair on its tail.

is that so? I'm now interested in finding a single purehair on/off visual comparison for anything other than on Lara.

maybe they limit number of simultaneous monkeys utilizing hairworks. the "furmark ball type of fur" is used when simulated hair is turned off. here's one monkey: https://youtu.be/fCmZBhbuqVU?t=169 probably not perfect, but certainly not as cheap as the default 'furmark' like fur.

actually its on wolves too, but that may be just a single scene AFAIK. that dog, however, its fascinating ass is all over the place 😛

Yes other characters have tressfx hair too, at least it looks like it. e.g. check his beard http://s6.postimg.org/jiv148b31/ROTTR_2016_01_29_01_30_27_516.jpg http://s6.postimg.org/y5nt88hst/ROTTR_2016_02_07_04_39_05_710.jpg http://s6.postimg.org/42hgty6fx/ROTTR_2016_01_29_01_07_56_516.jpg http://s6.postimg.org/9f6v2j09p/ROTTR_2016_02_07_04_33_20_955.jpg http://s6.postimg.org/5fs8r0sgt/ROTTR_2016_03_03_03_26_50_275.jpg As for FC4, I was in one mountain part, idk first 30 - 45min gameplay or so and by one guy who had monkeys around him and they literally disabled it on 2 monkeys (becazse it was to demanding enable don all 4 lol) and even on enabled it looked like crap - yeah like on that video, not realistic at all. Same thing in Witcher3 and his hair.. Don't get me wrong NV hair can be ok (tech demos), but its just not efficient enough like TressFX, no wonder they opt for TressFX instead of purehair by new TR even though its a gameworks game, kinda says it all.

They also had the source for TressFX, which meant that they could improve on it and iterate, and even use it on the consoles, something impossible for GameWorks.

check this nvidia guide, they specifically mention that purehair is applied solely to Lara, and then discuss other techniques used for humans as well as animals and fur-lined coats "without the dynamic movement of Lara's PureHair". the added interactive comparisons also make it quite clear. point stays, those other characters in tomb raider, while looking fine, have nothing to do with TressFX. Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix have been modifying their own version of tressfx for a long time now, obviously they'd use it for their games if it fits the purpose. it doesn't say anything about hairworks though.

PureHair is an NVIDIA or a Square Enix thing?

Pure Hair is Square's implementation of TressFX 3

Does this mean there will be more goodies for Unreal Engine 4?

I think he was asking a rhetorical question, suggesting Nvidia makes all this sh*t up about their partner's technologies in an extremely detailed graphics and performance guide 😀 (but I may be wrong)

No, it was a literal question. I don't believe that they make up anything.
