He-he-he, goodbye Mantle!
BTW, if anyone thinks Microsoft "just decided" to jump on Mantle with DX12 - think again - such changes are decided months (or even years before).
It is more likely AMD decided to create Mantle when they knew from Microsoft about their low-lovel API plans (and not being restricted by current OS developments - brought Mantle earlier than MS can do with DX12).
Of course it can be the opposite... but nevertheless these two techs were born together.

I thought Mantle was meant to be AMD's replacement for DX, why are they interested in DX12.

thank god these companies are coming to their senses about hardware and software restrictions on newer technology.
the way things are going someone with ivy-bridge mobo and a fermi gpu can easily enjoy broadwell cpus and DX12 which is a big win for end users that don't plan on upgrading their whole computer every generation.
just hoping DX12 won't need a new OS...

So are we saying that only new games will benefit from this? Shame if that is the case.

As per usual, Microsoft is always able to come up with improvements when there's competition.

They could update the existing DX9, DX10 and DX11 code I suppose but for compatibility reasons (And other reasons.) instead it's a new DirectX version, although it seems it won't add too many new features (But it'll make development easier and the reduced overhead and improved CPU usage is great.) if it'll be compatible with the XBO hardware via a later update.
(Or maybe it'll be divided into these feature levels again so they could add a shader model 5.1 for example or other stuff that needs full hardware support, yeah that's probably how it'll be.)

Obviously, it depends on how long it takes for DirectX 12 games actually to arrive (the quote 'late 2015' is 18 months away!) but it does sound like AMD's Mantle is going to be redundant within a couple of years with perhaps a few developers supporting it alongside DX12 like 3dfx's Glide API. I guess that is good news for NVIDIA graphics card owners though.

Microsoft been under so much fire recently, i think it might come to windows 7 unless lot people will use 8 by 2015.
I don't like AMD much though i had lot of xp with them, but u must thank AMD for pointing a huge finger on MS and developing mantle, without it probably we would never see DX12 or we see a stupid version of it.

Its not an assumption though

As expected 🙂 It will be here in 18 months, lets drop Mantle since you can wait for another 1,5 years for improvement to take potentially effect instead of having it now.
That's funny way of thinking guys.
Other thing is: Mantle is in development for 2 years and is here with AMD's very limited resources.
DX12 is in development for 4 years? With M$ resources and will be released in another 18 months, so 5,5 years of development?
No one questions such things?

You All have to notice That AMD and MS working on New DX a long time ago.
I think new DX will be long leap and New Games will be awesome cuz Hardware today is very powerfull.
