I don't know who made this decision but they should have just went with more ROP's and SMM.

I don't. I think Nvidia's PR sucks, I think he shouldn't have posted this. But the guy is pretty good at running a company and he cares a lot about gaming and the culture and everything. I think he's good.

I mean, even if Nvidia did go into this thinking the 1GB extra is a feature and yadadada, he should not have wrote this after it blew up. It's a really ****ty PR move and I wouldn't be surprised if the blog was taken down.

But still they should have made it with just 3GB memory. Wouldn't have mattered really all that much.

It's a tradeoff and it depends on how well Nvidia's driver handles the .5GB cache. If the heuristics are good, or get better -- then it essentially should behave like a 4GB card with very little stutter above the 3.5GB mark. If it doesn't then it behaves like a 3.5GB card. The alternative was to create a 3GB card. At least here Nvidia has the chance of improving their driver and what they do with the .5GB partition.

Using this 'design' they could have made the GTX 970 4.5GB or maybe an even 5GB. 🙂

They would of been better off creating a 3gb card, but probably realised people like myself skipped the 780 for that reason.
Mistake or not I do think people are owed more than a sorry, I know i could have gotten a refund if i wanted one, but don't think everyone had that choice.

I like Jen Hsun and even though this is a half ass response it is good to see the man at the top willing to take the sh!t storm.

haha ye, 970 is still the best card out there, the lesser specs make it even more impressive.
I do think they might release some optimized driver to utilize less memory on the card, or perform other tweaks... and we gonna see 970 rev 2 probably maybe by other name.
