another keyone on how to have the most innovative technologies, yet make them available only to people willing to pay at least 900eur for a gpu. I'm all for path tracing, there's no other way to achieve true cgi-level real time graphics in games, even if that comes at the cost of dlss3. With these prices I'm not surprised to see people, even enthusiasts who would like to have rt, temprorarily rdna2 their way out of the situation until rtx4080 level of rt/pt performance is $700. This is the third gen of rt cards already, would be nice to see costs of running rt going down, like rtx3070/3080, instead of up compared to even 1st gen of rtx cards.

If nobody builds the technology, no-one will use that technology. See this as the first steps on the path to affordable levels of Ray Tracing. If its not for you with this generation, it will be in the next or next-after generation. But if no-one is willing to push ahead with it, it will never get to that level. BTW: The RTX 3000 series has already got decent ray tracing performance, just don't expect to play all games at 4K.

Before trying to push path-tracing it would be nice to have ray-tracing. Not this alpha version where one needs to use upscaler to have usable performance even with bare minimum of rays cast that we have currently.

@cucaulay malkin doesnt mean it needs to be available for all within a few gens. virtually all safety features in cars available today, came from MB, and almost all of them only available in its S class series, and it takes about 10y to trickle down to other brands.

Yes but consoles mostly have frame locks to 30-40fps when ray tracing mode is used sometimes drops to the 20s but consoles use trickery to mask the framerate like super excessive motion blur ect

@Passus they also have VRR, so fps drops shouldnt really be an issue.

Disagree. Would rather create/optimize/build for pathtracing immediately and skip all the intermediately hackery bullshit. In older games it works great, performance is adequate, makes the quality significantly better while respecting original art direction. In newer games techniques are improving where PT is even being integrated into titles like CP2077. In a generation or two when we see 2-4x raytracing speed we'll be glad all these games had full integration. I also don't see the issues with upscalers. I'm willing to bet in blind A/B tests the vast majority of people couldn't pick the difference. In fact there might be a point soon where people are picking the upscaler as the better image. Furthermore even fully raster games are implementing various forms of TAA so linking upscaling to path/raytracing is kind of a moot point.

That's precisely why I'm contemplating getting an RDNA2 GPU once prices drop further, because the only way to get a reliably playable 4K raytraced experience is if you spend 4 figures on a GPU. As someone who plays games semi-casually and doesn't mind lowering some graphical settings just a notch, I find it hard to justify myself spending more than $350 on a new GPU. It has taken long enough for 4K@60FPS (without RT) to become attainable by reasonably priced GPUs, I'm not about to wait another decade for them all to be RT-ready. Besides, as the article suggests, there is room for optimization. I'd rather wait.

Yeah, ray tracing is Scottie Pippen, still great but path tracing is the MJ23 of real time graphics. It's the ultimate goal, better just cut to the chase instead of teasing us with "almost as good" for a decade.
