I somehow get the feeling that the speed gains in DX11 titles won't be big, but they will be fairly decent in DX12 (optimizations?).

That is what I want/need to know to too. I would expect it to be faster overall at default clocks plus if it overclocks as well as the GTX 980 Ti does then it could be considerably faster. I am a bit underwhelmed about the memory bandwidth though... 320 GB/s on a 256-bit bus does not sound very impressive (my own card currently has 360.5 GB/s on a 384-bit bus), particularly as higher resolutions such as 4K really need lots of bandwidth.

Well since the 980Ti is 20-25% faster than a 980 you can expect around 20% faster than the 980Ti and ever so slightly faster than the Titan X. so it's 60% faster than a 980 so 980's in SLi will still be faster but it's SLi so this depends greatly on the game since thats 0-99% scaling. I am kinda half tempted to get a 1080.

What they showed as 2 x 980 sli is "relative vr performance"... so who knows what cherry picked benchmarks.

Now I'm super keen. I thought nvidia would pull a 'last series+25%price' forever and make this card way too much to justify. Definitely upgrading if it's the 70% performance upgrade over a 980 they claim here.

Binned won't make up for a reference cooler. Seems more like they'll be selling the more expensive founder editions to impatient people, when demand starts to dry up they'll release the normal ones for a normal price. Similar to the usual "titan" strategy, only now we already know the non titan price beforehand. Makes sense considering gpu's on a new node are often sold out for the first few weeks, or months like with the 5850 and 5870.

Did you watch the conference? One GTX1080 is "faster the 2 GTX980's in SLI" and it is "considerably" faster then Titan X (which GTX980SLI is faster then a single Titan X). Obviously we still have to wait for benchies but I doubt that JHH statements will be wrong. Anyway with more mature drivers I'm sure the lead will only increase.

I do hope 1070 & 1080 will be performing as they said. If that is the case I do see myself buying a 1070 and not a 1080. I do not want to do the same mistake as I did with my 780. Bought one on day 1 and 2-3 months later 780ti got released (basically a slap in the face)..... So i'd rather get a midrange (well kinda) for a good price and swap it later for the big daddy if it will be worth it. If the performance is close to or on par with what they described 1070 bight be the new best bang-for-buck card in the high end segment (not enthusiast, cuz let's be honest, lately enthusiast cards had very poor price/performance and I do not see it changing)

They never said twice as fast as a 980 at all. They said one 1080 is faster than sli'd 980's while using VR. That's because they obviously focused on VR in the new arch which means it has 1.5-2x better performance while using VR Tech. A reference 1080 will be about 40% faster than a high ASIC 980 and 20-25% faster than a 980Ti. It only has 320GB/s bandwidth which is not a huge jump over the Ti. The difference is all in the clock speeds. If you could get a Ti to reach 2000mhz then the Pascal wouldn't lead by so much.

Well they did show game performance slides (ROTR, W3) with 1080 being roughly 70-80 % faster than 980.

AMD and Nvidia overhype their slides. Until we see a HH review here on Guru3d cant judge.
