This is ridiculous. All those pre-installed laptops and pc's with norton, clueless soccer moms mining ethereum.

The height of incompetence. Someone should lose their job over this for complete lack of foresight of the potential public blowback over this.

So the anti-virus is installing a virus. What a time to be alive!

Have a client that insists I use Norton for endpoint security on their systems because "it runs well on his home laptop" - I've been pushing for Crowdstrike but the cost is slightly higher and he's "never heard of it". Think I might just do Norton now - fuck em, let it mine the shit out of his company, hopefully they get ransomware'd too and have to pay in bitcoin. The irony.

Opposite scenario here, after showing our head IT admin the Norton Crypto FAQ; https://community.norton.com/en/forums/faq-norton-crypto The organisation is now in the process of nuking Norton usage on company laptops.

Webpages are of course cached and take a few minutes to kick in.

Pretty shady. Exactly not what you want your AV to be.

this is utterly nuts.

Exactly what you hoped your AV would protect against. 😀

I just uninstalled Norton a few weeks ago and would have done it sooner if I didn't have an active subscription. Microsoft's free antivirus built into Windows 10/11 is as good or better per the third party AV test sites. I also use the built in edge feature called SmartScreen which prevents malicious sites from loading. This type of functionality is one of the reasons I used Norton but these days Microsoft has us covered.

With both Symantec and Coinbase taking a cut, would the end user even see any returns? This sounds like you’d be mining their profits.

antivirus programs are the VPNs of the XP era, still around somehow

To be fair they will always be around so I think you mean paid for ones. Both Apple and Microsoft have built in AV's these days which are pretty good. It was just last year Microsoft's defender equaled Norton on virus detection.

It good thing I have been avoiding Norton for more then 3 decades. pay to have updates when free are just as good, but now one get to pay and have there system farm crypto on top of that. this is as bad a the sites that would mine on your computer if you were on there page. More reason to ignore them I been using Avast for long time but in last few years every PC I had to reinstall windows on I just used MS built in one, which does the job, avast is upto about 8-9 process just run and it annoying add popping up as notifactions are just as bad lately

Holy shit? Last thing from Norton I used was Norton Utilities in Windows XP era. Norton Commander in DOS days. I wonder what else they fucked up in the past decade.
