So in the evenings the other 60% of traffic are pretty much accountable to porn then? 😀

Youtube preloads a small amount of data into buffer so it can play without delay. Smarter way to safe bandwidth. Netflix users probably downloading movies on their devices as well as streaming.

That doesn't really safe bandwidth, it just protects you from playback disruption. At the end of the clip you're watching, you will always have downloaded the whole thing, no matter what strategy one uses to go about that.

It's because Comcast sucks.

I have to say thank you so much for this link to the report Hilbert. I missed this report and it was just not on my radar at all, yet has a lot of the information I require right now!

Not surprising. They are hitting it out of the park with quality shows.

for japan, i think amazon prime is abit more popular than netflix or hulu but again with the rise for internet TV, there are many alternative like abematv, rakutenTV etc. then if we look on whole-internet-stream in japan, like mentioned in the report personal live-streaming service also trending, probably more people watching livestream than on-demand service nowdays, i am not really sure.... with youtube(r) probably at the top, then there is various streaming sites, niconicolive, linelive, twitcast, onerec, showroom, there are still bunch of the rest its really simple to live-streaming nowdays, all u need is mobile phone and internet connection and thats it

They most certainly do, but I still prefer them over Verizon.

If you watch the whole video, then yes, no bandwidth is saved. But as of now, youtube only preloads a tiny amount of the upcoming datastream (not sure if it's % or time based, maybe a combination of both or, more likely, something smarter) instead of preloading content that you might not end up watching. Youtube used to preload everything, which was nice if you wanted to skip through a video, but hugely wasteful since most videos are not watched in full anyway.

That's a lot of bandwidth.

I'm an European but I don't enjoy any of the EU produced stuff. US shows all the way! * * (With some tiny exceptions) It's interesting though that Youtube, an american Google-owned service, is more popular in EU than it is in US.

Don't worry though, i'm sure ISPs aren't trying to segregate data and make you pay a premium for better netflix access though Not in the EU tho, but it's ok cause we have garbage to fill it in Not that I also watch any EU shows on netflix barring like, black mirror?

Video streaming eats away a sizable chunk of internet bandwidth, and who don't use Netflix, YouTube and services like Prime these days?
**sizeable** **Who DOESN'T** and "Amazon Prime" Totally willing to help you proof read these before you post them Hilbert. I see a lot of mistakes and while it may not be a big deal, it does reflect poorly on this site, which I love! I have to say, what I find quite hilarious is the mention of "in the evening" - completely bypassing the fact that evening is relevant only to your location on the globe, so it's basically always evening somewhere. Seems like a rather poorly though out article in that aspect. I suspect it's once again good ol 'murica thinking they are the only place on earth and those stats pertain only to the US of A. (although I didn't look closely at the sources for this article).

Amazon, Hulu and then Neflix https://soranews24.com/2018/02/05/what-is-japans-most-used-on-demand-video-streaming-service/

And its all free. I find it funny people pay good money for TV. Evne if your not into older shows all the major networks have OTA affiliates.
Probably as funny as we find it that someone would watch antenna tv in this day and age. I will never ( and have not for the last 20yrs) watch antenna TV. Ads? No thanks. 42 minutes of your favourite show and 18 minutes of ads breaking the immersion? Well, each to their own, but there are plenty of old black and white flicks on streaming services btw and there are also these things called DVDs and Blu-rays 😉 just sayin.

0% of bandwidth is used by Netflix and like streaming on my end... Most online streaming sites do not have much in the way of classic black and white shows form the 50s and so they are of no use for me. TV is free were I'm at (OTA) and there are many small TV stations that specialize in older programing. We have one network that shows noting but 90s sitcoms, its mostly 3rd rock, married with Children and Drew Carey 😱 And anther shows nothing but black and white shows from the 40s to early 60s. There are a few others that air shows you can't find anywhere else. Small local production stuff that never made it to the internet and I get alot of channels that you can get with cable, satellite or online. And its all free. I find it funny people pay good money for TV. Evne if your not into older shows all the major networks have OTA affiliates. Wow that's insane. But with the internet being the way it is all one has to do is move the servers out of the country to get around it.
Maybe where you are but in Canada where I'm at ota is scarce at least for anything I watch.

Ever heard of a tivo? You can skip right over adds. You have them on cable, satellite and most streaming services. Not only that but OTA tv is uncompressed. It has a stupid high bit rate and is far better image quality then cable, satellite and some streaming services. As for dvds and bluerays. There is alot of stuff not released for home media. Rather inconvenient too. Having to shift though disks and change them everything few episodes.
Each to their own, but as for TV, it's never uncompressed. Also, you pay for TIVO and it's just another device I don't need to buy, less cables etc. There are plenty of options for watching stuff on the net without paying and it's far more convenient.
