This could be a very, very good display for gaming, maybe what I wanted from Samsung for some years now, only if: 1. Local dimming will not be disabled with game mode; 2. VRR works with both Nvidia and AMD GPUs. Otherwise, having a 50 inch display, with over 1000 nits in HDR, low input lag and no burn in risk, just might be a winner. It depends on the prices as well.

Gotta say I'm glad that things still improving in this field. Perhaps there's a chance to get one of these as a monitor and get back much better contrast levels, quite needed in many stealth orientated games. Well, everything actually looks better with better black levels.

Almost every higher tier TV/display will have microLED of some sort now. Sony has two new models, one targeting gamers and other one targeting deeper blacks and better IQ over nits (it's still proper HDR, just not insane). Except for OLED TVs ofc, they don't need separate lighting or zoning :P

This is what I have been waiting on to upgrade my monitor. Its a perfect compromise between OLED and prior gen LCD.

this has fantastic appeal and is a very cost effective solution. in addition the micro leds can be (and probably are) tuned to avoid HF light (high blue and violet) while still being color correct. which you can't do with wide spectrum leds or fluorescent lighting. by having smaller zones you get more accurate global lighting and with the quantum dots kicking in you'll have dynamic color. and no blooming

I'm not really into the whole mini LED thing. Add enough zones and it might be pretty good, but I've seen enough demonstrations where something moving along a dark background gets to be pretty distracting as the backlights transition. I'd rather just get micro LED, when it becomes available at a reasonable price.

The more the dimming zones, higher the processing power requirements for controlling the dimming zones. Which means higher the latency. I am guessing Samsung will have their typical little-to-no FALD during game mode.

That tech is dead, or, it will be because it's inferior to both microled and oled. Just get a screen from: TLC, Panasonic, Sony, LG, and NOT Samsung. If you need a screen that is for more than just watching TV...

That actually is something I don't think is much of a concern. For one thing, I'm sure it processes the dimming zones and pixels in parallel (or it ought to be designed that way, anyway). In doing so, there wouldn't be any additional latency. Also, LEDs change states faster than LCDs, so if for example the display processes the pixel rendering first and then calculates the dimming zones, the pixels likely won't be fully transitioned by the time the LEDs are instructed to change.

Yeah I do want to see some tests of these. I do suspect some of that has been due to lower end companies jumping into mini led first. I suspect Samsung will have the engineering power to deal with processing this many "FALD" zones and doing it in a way to minimize blooming and LED/LCD synch issues. I do want to see it tested but I may buy a TV with this tech because of stupid bright room I have.

can we drop LED/LCD tech already? it terrible oLED and MicroLED are othing that comparable to CRT where it counts which in how thing look in motion LED/LCD look nice only with slow moving images even then it terrible imo or static images I still compare all panel tech to CRT in the reguard cause that is what maters to me most

The only good thing I see in mini LED technology is that it should theoretically provide much better backlight uniformity. Couldn't care less about local dimming gimmick which only looks good in Samsung's marketing essays that overflow from buzzwords as usual while missing the only important number - pixels per each individual LED.

That would be nice if it could process dimming zones and pixels in parallel, but to what I understand modulation of colour pixels vs modulation of White light LEDs is quite different, still requires additional processing. Which is why with FALD latency is almost 4-5times as high 10ms vs 40-50ms. Where you will be 100% right is dual layer LCD panels. They just feed same synchronized signal to two LCDs, first LCD (which is grayscale only) modulates the backlight, second LCD in front generates colour image, and backlight is just a constant stream of bright white light firing into first LCD from all the way in the back.

Right, but because there are so fewer LEDs to control than there are pixels, that additional processing would be relatively fast. So, I still don't think there would be any noteworthy latency problem.

Fair enough. The fewer the better for latency, but right now even 400 Zones LED are running at 50-100ms latency. So, if we jump to 1000 zones with miniLED, we will only make it worse right?

I wasn't aware 400 zones added that much latency. That is actually pretty bad hahaha. I assume Samsung would have to account for that though.

I am sure they may double the performance to keep the impact to 50ms ish. But it would be good if they can quadruple the performance to drop the FALD latency down to like 25ms or something. That is still playable. I mean you are around 1.5ish frames behind, but still better than 3-4frames behind with current gen FALD.

So, anyone want to take a bet on how long Organic LED (as we know it ((one panel)) is made redundant? It happened to Plasma, it happened to CRT; OLED is on the way out - it's not the end, but you can see it from here.
