I'm very tempted to grab at least one of these cards, I'm just not sure if to wait for non-reference 290x/290s and GTX 780Ti to pop first... even though the avalability of these cards will be very slim anyway where I live for the first weeks.

hey Solfaur, I'm sure your 2x 680 run everything just fine, why are you thinking about upgrading?

2gb vram limits?

could be that, depends on how well his games run tbh, also depends on what games he plays.

Use Windows 8.1 with DX 11.2 and just wait for Maxwell or AMD next gen.

Yeah it will take some time before the cards hit the stores here anyway, especially aftermarket ones. As for my 2x680s, windows 8 and new ssd will arrive tomorrow so I'll check out the performance of BF4 after the OS update, if it's good and vram won't choke the game than I'll probably keep the 680s. I'm playing at 2560x1440, games like Crysis 3 or Metro LL need a lot of tweaking to run fine, it's not just the vram that is an issue but also not enough horse power. 🙂 I'll wait and see for a while, if I can get a good price on 680s in the meanwhile I'll definitely upgrade to 290/290x or a 780Ti IF it has more than 3GB.

Yeah, that is the plan, it's just that I had horrible experience with my rig on Windows 7 in BF4 and that kind of rang some upgrade bells. If The situation changes with Windows 8 and the game runs as good as BF3 does than I will no doubt wait for Maxwell/290x refresh or whatever next year.

before you even consider a reference 290x, check this out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sceM0-pfbb4
Basically the same damn HSF they've been using since the 5000 series. Why are they so stingy on the HSF of even their highest end cards? Mine for example would skyrocket over 90C even with the fan manually set to max out at 60C. I bought a 3rd party HSF and it maxes at 60C even with the current OC.

Holy **** lol, I'm definitely NOT going to buy a reference card if I go 290/290X. I got spoiled by my sublime 680s Lightning cooling, even on 100% fan rpm (which I only use when benching overclocks) it's not THAT loud. 😀
