I don't understand. A host card..for what?
It allows you to connect an External Intel 750 SSD or any other SSD that uses a U.2 connector to a M.2 4x PCI-E Gen 3 Slot on you motherboard. The daughter card is basically an adapter. Currently there is only one SSD on the market that uses a U.2 connector and thats the Intel 750 SSD. Where it might get confusing is that this particular SSD comes in two "flavors" This first is a PCI-E based which plugs into any PCI-E slot on your motherboard. The second is the external one that would connect to your motherboard using this daughter card as an adapter to allow you to connect it to you M.2 slot on your motherboard. M.2 is some what new so if your motherboard is more than 2 years old it might not have it.

Since when was a sata3 ssd not enough? Are game loading times on sata 3 ssds not great enough? is that 5 second loading time for windows 10 holding you back? I totally understand why someone wants 4 TitanX cards and a 5960X with 16 threads but what the heck is the point of storage that is faster that 550mb/s

depend the use... for game ok it is enough, but as an exemple think that there is pro video that need far more than 550mb/s on a single drive, at least by media and per frame it can work... the storage is always too slow and is the achille point of any system (yes even in raid 🙂 ). *edit* btw TitanX is not the big monster as NVidia advertise Quadro + tesla are more resource demanding

Professional use and workstation. http://techgage.com/news/intel-launches-ridiculously-fast-750-pcie-solid-state-drive-series/ The 750 actually goes past the Sata speed.
