Damn maybe I should have waited..

Awesome news. I may just wait for the Lightning.

Waiting patiently for the benchmarks on the 390X before I spend £££. If MSI 980 Ti Gaming wins then I'm defecting to Nvidia for the first time! Also I'm getting pissed off with AMD drivers and the constant crashes and issues. They need to put more effort into driver support. Whats going to be so special about the lightning version?

Better VRM's and usually enhanced Voltage control. Also you will like it over here we have cake.

First post, been lurking guru3d for years 🙂 Any indication or gut feeling of when the GTX 980 Ti GAMING 6G will become available Hilbert? The 980Ti is really expensive in South Africa, we are basically paying $1000 for it and I really want the best one I can find 🙂

I get custom coolers, but people that buy stuff like lightning editions or whatnot that cost 100 bucks more for an extra -Possible- 50 mhz baffles me.

This one or the g1 from gigabyte i still dont know yet, if this one got the fan stopping spinning problem i go for the g1 ofcourse i dont like mid 50 iddle temps, lets see and wait for reviews first.

The Lightning series from MSI have always had an special appeal to me personally.Damn beautiful cards. Very high end components and the various voltage control you get from MSI's Afterburner software and more is like a wet enthusiasts dream for me. If they produce one in red / black color scheme this time i have no choice, I will have to get one. Whether it will be nvidia or AMD time will tell in terms of price/perf. But for 5 years that i plan to use it I think the extra buck might be worth it.

I've been impressed with my 970 G1 (I rarely hit 60c while gaming). But overall I think 970's run cooler. I'm sorely tempted to upgrade to the 980 Ti (50% increase from my 970) along with getting the Acer Predator XB270HU. I would just grab another 970 being cheaper, but never been a fan of SLI even with the improvements (Still has issues/doesn't always work.)

The new Gigabyte GTX 980ti Gaming G1 adopted the "no spinning fan" just like the MSI Gaming and Asus Strix series: "GIGABYTE displayed its latest WindForce 3X VGA cooler design at Computex, which makes its debut with the GeForce GTX 980 Ti Gaming G1 graphics card. This 3-slot cooler packs enough metal to cool the GeForce GTX 980 Ti with its three fans completely stopped, when the GPU is below a 65°C temperature threshold. The underlying heatsink design consists of two independent aluminium fin stacks, with 8 mm thick copper heat pipes meeting at the GPU base, where they make direct contact with the GPU die. A base-plate cools the memory and VRM. Three 100 mm fans ventilate the heatsink, which are topped off by a two-tone metal shroud. The card features six display outputs including two DVI, three DisplayPort 1.2, and an HDMI 2.0; and supports up to five displays at a time. This card will be formally launched a little later, as the company launched its GTX 980 Ti with a reference-design board." techpowerup

The Lightning versions from nVidia or AMD have always been black and yellow, with a yellow fan in het middle, so I seriously doubt that. 😀

Well it is the only MSI card that has 3 fan cooler. Like previous lightning version cards before it.

Plus the 3 fan cooler as well.

What monitor do you have?

The three fan cooler is something new that started with the 290x and 780 lightnings used to just have two fans. Personally I could care less about the cooler on it as I will be drowning mine if I get one.

If there is a full water block, I may pick this card up

On the other hand their gaming series they have conjured up with the dragon logo is quite awesome looking and hard to improve or surpass in any aspect as far as I am able to see. The quality will be pretty much on par so there is a high probability I might "settle" with that.

more is not always better. 3 fan solutions usually are louder and have no improvement in temperatures. you can clearly see this if you compare 980 (non Ti) from MSI and Gigabyte. MSI 2 fan twin frozr V on load noise was 30 dbA, while Gigabyte 3 fan cooler load noise was 43 dbA (source TechPowerUp reviews).

Yeah I know more isn't better sometimes however I have a tri-fan cooler card it is is pretty quiet.

They just have better quality cherry picked components with smoother power delivery which in turn reduces noise, heat. They also usually come with a better warranty and higher out of the box clocks, which some people like because they don't overclock so they like fast out of the box products that may cost a bit more. These products will probably last longer too, having better power control and more VRMs means they are doing less work.

not sure getting lighting edition worth the money or not (its like extra 150usd in my local store for gtx780) lighting 3fans abit different compared to other 3fans card u can set different speed for middle and left-right fan component wise, it should similar rest msi non-reference card imo msi should cherry-pick lighting series chip... gtx780 lighting seems nope...
