Going back to the old start menu is such a step back. Why do the vocal majority have be the whiners who cant deal with change, even if its for the best.

As a Windows 8.1 user I have no problem with the new start screen and the absence of the start menu. That doesn't mean they did it right. The answer is no. It's not convenient and the charms bar is so annoying. All those are targeted towards touch screen and that's fine but what they did wrong is that they forgot about the desktop users which are the most. Windows 8 are a nice OS run smoother and faster than 7 and also "ages" slower than 7. I use it every day and it's really ok but those menus and bars it's not that they are so terrible and I can't find my apps but they are not convenient and they also have a lot of design flaws which I will not write down now. And let's not forget that Windows 8 before the 8.1 update was absolutely terrible. That did hurt people's perception about W8 to a point without return. This must work like intended from the beginning and not waiting for fixes afterwards. If something is not ready simply don't release it. Microsoft tried to experiment but they failed miserably. Now let's go back to what worked perfectly for so many years. If something works then don't fix it.

Nah...
You can still choose to use start screen if you like and its not "the old start menu back". Its new start menu, which combines the old start menu and the new start screen.

That isn't the meaning of 'debunked'... To debunk is to confirm or expose that something is false. So the article should read that 2 rumours have now been confirmed, or confirmed as true.
Just thought I'd say something. 🙂

The charms bar. People keep saying its annoying, I don't get it. I only ever see it, we I intentionally put my mouse down in the bottom left.
The start screen is great imo, not more clicking as if I was playing Diablo.
All the issues that were wrong in 8 are now fixed really.
Explorer is improved and if need be, can be reverted to 7 style explorer with one click on an '^' in the top right of a window.
How come this mentality seems to only get applied to MS. No one ever says this about Ubi/EA etc games, trash release after release and people keep pre-ordering while telling themselves 'Maybe they got it right this time'.:bang:

This is great, thanks MS!

I hope 9 is a lot better. My first day on 8.1 and the menu is so annoying.
Have to wait and see if it grows on me.

This way they do not have to support W8/8.1. They can avoid Windows Vista situation. Because W8.1 market share is not that big, I think this makes sense.

The fact that Microsoft are offering Windows 9 as a free update seems to suggest to me that it isn't going to be hugely different from Windows 8.1. Why even bother marketing it as a new operating system...why not just call it Windows 8.2 or Windows 8 Service Pack 2?
Is there really any need to release a new version of Windows every 2-3 years anyway? Usually that comes with its share of compatibility issues, particularly with older software that probably isn't being updated any more not to mention some games not working properly (anyone who has played any of Techland's older games can tell of upside-down, mirrored black & white loading screens and videos on Windows 8, something that was never ever fixed!!!).
