And the $4000 PC can actually run games unlike the Mac Pro lol

Why on Earth 980M??? Of course margins will be a couple of dollars smaller, but 1080 makes way much more sense.

apart from the moving screen i dont see the appeal at all

It's a cool and slick design, but that price range is vomit inducing!:puke:

What are you talking about? The Mac Pro can play Solitaire and Pinball just fine.

For $3000 you get a sub $800 PC. Nothing about this makes sense. MS trying to be Apple. I still remember walking into a Windows store for the first time and just laughing at how much they ripped off Apple stores. Just no originality what so ever.

For that price you'd think it would at least use desktop components instead of laptop components but no, this is just vastly overpriced laptop internals that have been put in a cute little box, been bolted to a 4500x3000 touchscreen and given Mac-like aesthetics. At the price they're asking you might as well build a proper desktop/tower workstation. At least then you can choose your monitor instead of having to be stuck with a 4:3 touchscreen. Seriously, who actually uses a touchscreen for serious work at a high-end workstation? Anybody? No?

The price and specs seem off because you're not the target demographic. A gamer buying this thing makes very little sense. Specs: The 980M is compatible with every program I use in VFX/Motion Design. The entire 10-series line of chips won't be compatible with any of my CUDA-accelerated plugins/apps until early next year. The opened 1080 sitting next to my workstation can attest to this. Price: Granted, some of that is poured into the size and design, but the display alone is quite pricey. 4.5k x 3k (3:2 aspect) is not only a one-off resolution, but supports DCI-P3 color and sounds like a dream for video content creation. The ability to have a full-size 4k preview with room for a panel or to on the side and your whole timeline/layer panel underneath? Yes please. The other aspects of this come from the accessories. Wacom makes a 27" Pen & Touch display that costs $2800, and doesn't include the (laptop-class) PC hardware in it's base. If the pen technology is at least as good as the Surface Pro 4, this will be a steal for illustrators and designers that threw their mouse away years ago in favor of a pen tablet. Anyways, like the 5k iMac, there is no apples-to-apples comparison to be had, but the one thing I can be sure of is this is not a gaming device.

Uh, people that draw? You know -- the market this product is clearly aimed at? The comments in this thread are mind boggling to me. "I don't understand it, so it's overpriced and useless". The only competitor to this product is the Cintiq 27QHD Touch - it's $2700 and it's not even a computer, it's an add-on device for a computer. And yes, people actually buy them - because believe it or not, there is an entire industry of people who draw/create/develop things. It's extremely expensive because the market is small and there is a ton of custom designed parts going into it and only it. Most of the creative professionals that are going to buy it work for companies that spend nearly double that on macs. It doesn't need a fancy graphics card, because most studios export heavy encoding/workloads to servers dedicated to processing those tasks. Photoshop like stuff can be done on an i5, let alone an i7 with a 980m in it. Edit: It took me a while to write this post because I was eating, praze beat me to the punch.

Those lazy bastards couldn't even be bothered to use SSD's and Geforce 10 series graphics cards yet they're asking 3-4 grand for the machine. A GTX 980M graphics card from last season and a mobile version at that. #Micro$haft!

The level of retardation required to compare this to gaming systems is over 9.000. The materials cost for that screen alone is probable more than $1.500. Not everything is for gaming, and not everything needs to be a box. We're not even the audience for this thing. I actually admire the amount of work and innovation it has on it. Microsoft invents new form factors, and seems to be by far the most creative big tech company the last five years. Listen to this man, he's right about everything on this:

Let me add the Surface Dial to the whole picture of an (almost) completely new form factor. This thing looks amazing.

I remember walking into a Gateway Country store... The Apple Store was another idea that Steve Jobs stole....

Going into 2017 those gpu setups are inadequate to push all those pixels. That needs at very minimum gtx1080. 4500 x 3000 ends up being like 13.5 megapixels. Why does Microsoft release outdated equipment that is totally inadequate? Case in point surface book. Same issue the gpu was inadequate for all the pixels. Not worth the money.

It looks nice and if i had a use for this it would be in my home, but i dont so i wont. But its clearly a poke at apples market in content creation etc.

I would like to thank praze, Denial and PrMinisterGR for the only sane comments so far (praze wins overall for best first post ever). For the people going on about how it doesn't have desktop class components, is underpowered, etc. IT'S NOT A FECKING GAMING MACHINE. It's aimed at content creators. The screen for example will prioritize accurate colour representation rather than a quick refresh rate. Having said that, I'd love to boot up Homeworld Remastered on it 😀.

Honestly for such price i was expecting a 1080m or something like that, coupled with SSD's only. Disgusting. I mean really this is disgusting, and some fella that doesnt know anything about the hardware will buy it and think hes on par with Mac lovers.

This thing is years ahead over an Imac... the Imac have suddenly take a decade old. Its a fixed screen on a table. Here you get a 28" 4500x3000 ( a 27" Waco Cintiq is 2700$ without the PC for run it ), P3 , its a beautyfull alternative for digital artist. This dial is amazing, tactile and full pen support, it is a digital paint table as an AIO. Its funny, if i was going wild and imagine the future of the I-Mac, i will surely end on something close to the Studio. ( in fact, i ask me what could do Apple for make evolve the Imac now ). Ofc it is not much aimed at gamers.. It is not the aimed public. You have no idea what this announce have done in the digital content creators circle. dont worry, you will get a refresh with a 1080M surely in some month or with vega.

This MS hardware is not for general public. But I can sure see Apple trembling. This is actually great hardware for professionals and not at all overpriced once you compare it to other similar stuff on the market. It doesn't mean that I would spend my money on it but a lot of creators will consider this before buying a mac. If apple can have success with their crap, overpriced, overhyped products I sure can see MS having a go at their market

In the first post, it clearly says "a desktop for consumers" so it appears not to be aimed exclusively at graphic designers/artists/architects or other professionals in that area so the comments about it being overpriced and using laptop parts does seem justified in that respect! Obviously the main selling point (and the high price) is the 'better than 4K Touchscreen', but can the 965M/980M cope well enough with 3D content at 4500x3000 resolution? Also, are these upscaled to that resolution as the spec for 9xxM says they have a max res of 3840 x 2160? Also, can't find a GTX964M so must be a typo in the graphic and means GTX965M.
