I will be going for the nore powerful model as i did with the X version, and it has nothing to do with the fact that by the time October comes along i will have £100 in MS rewards saved up. 🙂

Well they have to release multiple consoles. You can't name a singular console Xbox Series X, unless they just like bad grammar.

There's been a lot of speculation on this. It makes sense if they want to come into the next generation at a competitive price, while also retaining the performance crown. A $400 Series S would let them meet or beat Sony on price. Series X will let them claim superiority on specs (Moar Teraflopz!), whether the performance justifies it or not. Assuming this is the plan, it will be interesting to see how Sony responds. Everything we've heard so far is that they're focused on one SKU for PS5. Do they launch an even more powerful premium SKU at some point that leapfrogs Series X on horsepower?

I don't think sony is that worried at being the absolute performance king. They know all they need is a good enough console, because: 1) they already have much more and better exclusives 2) typically the most sold console isn't the most powerful in the generation The latter point is especially proven by looking at the Switch, which is selling like hotcakes even though it's a glorified tablet with physical buttons.

Maybe not at launch. But unless they specifically get out and tell people there isn't a more powerful version coming down the line, a lot of people will just assume there will be a PS5 Pro at some point. As you said though, exclusives will drive sales. It seems like they are well positioned to make a better case for their console than Microsoft is for the Xbox. Microsoft needs several new AAA IPs at this point.

Yes, I agree. For the record, I'm not saying the switch is a bad product, it just isn't anywhere near cutting edge technology.

The fact that Microsoft is coming with the "most powerful" right out of the gate means that sony can wait for a while and then lauch a ps5 pro with (much?) better specs, so that might be another way for them to get in the front. Nothing stopping microsoft from designing a xbox z/omega/dumbword, but there can be only so much leapfrogging in the same console generation.
