These microcode updates do not appear as part of the cumulative Windows updates, but must be downloaded separately.
Aw, isn't M$ thoughtful towards Intel <3 Still wonder how much performance impact would be.

No Windows 8.1 love? Microsoft being Microsoft. I can totally understand no more support for 7, but 8.1 is not EOL. Or am I missing something?

Are those update permanent? If i update the microcode of a cpu using windows, then i move the cpu in another computer, that cpu is still updated right?

Likely coming later as Windows 10 has a larger install base and is a higher priority for them.

So they are in the race of plugging the swiss cheese holes too ?

These days I wonder if I shouldn't just deactivate it all and enjoy a few fps etxtra in all the games...

Or just go with an amd cpu and stop thinking about it.

Oh don't worry, I'd appreciate a more sooner than later launch of Ryzen 4K anyway. Had to postpone my update already (wanted to do it about now). One thing about this whole situation, and why it feels so badly taken care of by Intel / m$ is that there is not even a comprehensive list... some of that stuff comes via BIOS updates, some of it comes via OS updates of which you get some automatically, some not... I'm not sure I even have all the security and microcode updates installed, and no idea how to check. And I'm already more interested than the average PC user...

I disabled it on my Sandy E and Westmere E, im not giving away my performance and HT, im not someone who would benefit from exploiting so who cares.

Oh I meant the update of my rig, should have wrote upgrade sry. Yeah like I said, I am fairly sure I'm missing the patch before the last security issue, the last one didn't hit me (CPU too old), and now this one. But yeah, would have to search the threads again to know more or less for certain

No.
So what the hell is this microcode? isn't it a sort of firmware? That means it gets updated at every boot or simply that it can be rolled back? We are talking of updating not a piece of windows but a piece of intel software inside the CPU, right?

if it can go inside the CPU and reconfigure something permanently then I am wrong.... I wish someone else would chime in on this that knows more than I.

One thing I'm finding a little weird is how there's not much mention at all about the Intel GPU vulnerabilities in Windows. Perhaps there aren't any, but I find it weird how that could be OS-specific. The mitigations resulted in a devastating performance blow in Linux, but, I'm not sure if it was a Linux-only problem. Intel has recently released another patch that fixes most of that performance loss, though I don't yet know how bad it currently stands.

What it does is updates mcupdate_genuineintel.dll which is loaded and reinits patchable area's of the cpu if newer during the transition from real to protected or long modes.
data/avatar/default/avatar04.webp
but those patchable areas, once patched are patched.

I'll decline the offer, my CPU has been crippled enough by now.
