M$ likes direct access to information. Especially when it gives business advantage. With Linked-IN, M$ knows movements of brains. With github, they'll know what many of those brains are doing too.

If that's the case, I take this as a negative news. Mainly due to the fact MS will MOST likely literally "steal" some bits of code to block certain software / add to their own. Won't be surprised if we will see a rise of alternative platforms. (afaik there are already several GitHub'ish platforms)

Seems like terrible news. Every time MS buys something it struggles and dies, I.e. Skype. It used to be a fine messenger to use for work communication, but now the newer versions often do not work and MS is pedantic about their customer support. So my 10 year old skype account (now MS account) thinks I have been born in 2017 and the only way to change it is to pay the MS or send them a copy of my passport/ID/driving licence via mail, or fax (!!!). Obviously, non of that is an acceptable option. Now I don't use github that often, as I only sporadically write any code, but I pity those that rely on it. Not to mention the concerns about anything put in there that cryohellinc mentioned.

First thing I thought is that that's the end of Github. Watch it be changed in such a way that it will be useless in less than 18 months.

+1 Well said.

Github won't die because microsoft most likely won't interfere with it. And for people who said skype died, unfortunately all big tech corps use skype for business. They have at least 370 000 users from Bosch only.

They don't even need to do that after all there reason why GitHub open source to everyone to see the code I think MS has other reason for buying GitHub so in tell that come out there no telling what it is as why there bought it, but then again they may not do any thing.

It's crazy. Microsoft has so much money they don't know what to do with it all. I know I could never do well in the grand business world because I simply can't understand the prices paid for the various services and software houses over the years. I know lots of people use Github, but, come on, 7.5 billion dollars?

What's next, Microsoft own version of Linux? I dare to say that we could see that, not far in the future.

Conflict with what? Microsoft has been in GitHub business since many years. And they shut down own conflict - CodePlex. On the other hand dev-oriented products has been of very high quality. Well, there is one conflict - Atom, as Atom's brother, Visual Studio Code, made by Microsoft. Probably they stop investing into Atom. But it doesn't mean Atom will not be developed by community. On the other hand VSC is really better than Atom. And not just editor, but also marketplace, as atom.io/packages is a mess. For GitHub itself. Well, let's hope they won't start fixing it to accommodate to housewifes. Likely not, as this is not end-user service. Let's hope, and there is a large probability, that they will keep developing it as they do with VSC - listening to community.

Microsoft is already a major contributor to GitHub (almost 1,800+ repositories). I do not see them messing it up.

I fail to see any reason even with microsoft's budget for paying $7.5b to buy GH and "not" do anything with it or just for owning it. You just don't pay or do that unless there is a seriously important reason behind it.
