M$ likes direct access to information. Especially when it gives business advantage.
With Linked-IN, M$ knows movements of brains. With github, they'll know what many of those brains are doing too.

If that's the case, I take this as a negative news. Mainly due to the fact MS will MOST likely literally "steal" some bits of code to block certain software / add to their own.
Won't be surprised if we will see a rise of alternative platforms. (afaik there are already several GitHub'ish platforms)

Seems like terrible news. Every time MS buys something it struggles and dies, I.e. Skype. It used to be a fine messenger to use for work communication, but now the newer versions often do not work and MS is pedantic about their customer support. So my 10 year old skype account (now MS account) thinks I have been born in 2017 and the only way to change it is to pay the MS or send them a copy of my passport/ID/driving licence via mail, or fax (!!!). Obviously, non of that is an acceptable option.
Now I don't use github that often, as I only sporadically write any code, but I pity those that rely on it. Not to mention the concerns about anything put in there that cryohellinc mentioned.

First thing I thought is that that's the end of Github. Watch it be changed in such a way that it will be useless in less than 18 months.

Github won't die because microsoft most likely won't interfere with it. And for people who said skype died, unfortunately all big tech corps use skype for business. They have at least 370 000 users from Bosch only.

What's next, Microsoft own version of Linux? I dare to say that we could see that, not far in the future.

Like how Codeplex just died... It would be a shame if github went that same route

Microsoft is already a major contributor to GitHub (almost 1,800+ repositories). I do not see them messing it up.

I fail to see any reason even with microsoft's budget for paying $7.5b to buy GH and "not" do anything with it or just for owning it.
You just don't pay or do that unless there is a seriously important reason behind it.
