I have Win7 Nas.. and sometimes is nice to share something to Dos, Win9x, WinXP etc.. There is nothing like graphical FTP client for Dos.. Win9x there is at least WinSCP and you can install on Windows machine so SSH server- but its not inbuild.

in actuality, the exploits require that you are exposing your SMB services to WAN, enforcing higher versions makes sense for WFH/Corporate, but Home users are more than likely quite safe so long as they keep these services LAN only.
Devices being sold right now are still using the v1 protocol for their file server services(SAMBA), the v2 protocol supporting versions is larger and ruthan
