That's one way they can hope to get more programs converted to store apps. Still, nobody has ever bought a windows device to use a UWP.
Why would I want to cede control to MS? What if I want to use an older version or stay ahead of the curve with an alpha? I use standalone programs now and I couldn't be happier. I don't want to redownload everything from their crappy store and hope things will be restored everytime things go wrong because the UWP part of windows is the most fragile part.

I've used the Windows store exactly once, when Windows 8.1 upgrade came through it. Other than that I don't see it, I don't open it, I don't miss anything. Neither do I see the Windows 10 startmenu. The 5€ I invested into Stardock's Start 10 have been one of the best investments I ever made. I can enjoy a fully nag- and adfree Windows.

OS business is a dead business. That's why Cutler (father of NT) quit working on OSes after Windows 7 / Server 2012 R2 was shipped. He is now leading the business / cloud computing team around MS Azure.
W10 is merely GUI customizing high-level & offering alternatives to freeware Apps in the Store done by people like Sarkar and MS home grown junior devs.
You won't find any pioneering going on with this bunch of people. It's all about getting the most out of the user now. -> Creating a Microsoft-controllable environment by honeydicking the users with features they either don't need or already had the possibility to have with Freeware that exists since the 90's/00's/10's ...
It's a really good question who will lay the next big egg in OS design, if that is even something happening in the near future.
All GUI driven modern OSes ("Consumer"-Linux, OSX, Windows) are basically tile-based, window-based, quickbar/taskbar/shortcut based interfaces. Then you put your wallpaper in the background and you got it. Offer Siri / Cortana for people who have forgot how to use the keyboard and tools like "ls, dir, grep, Windows Desktop Search, Everything / Copernic / Ava-Find" and like to repeat search queries multiple times in many situations (to lose time).
There need to be dramatic improvements to the kernel IO AND/OR the capability of the user interface to get to the next level of operating system history. W10 definitely isn't the real big-time.
It's W7/8.1 with forced Aero, some DX12/WDDM dlls, a store APP, some X-Box integration, "Cortana+Edge", increased Telemetry + enhanced data mining (for the users best experience of course), preinstalled bloat depending on Edition like "One-Drive", "Skype" and the possibilty to finally do proper copy + paste in cmd-Windows 🤓
W10 is Windows 7/8.1 made fancy, nothing more.
If MS or Apple want their next OS to succeed, they'd have to make a leap like there was one from 3.1 to 95, or from 98/ME to XP/2000.
People are also more forced into cleaning the mess after installing W10.
Just look at all the suppor threads in W10 forums or reddits.
Everyone wants to know how to remove bloat, how to get rid of annoying forced updates, how to get rid of annoying notifications, how to get W7 GUI / functionality back, how to disable telemetry, etc, etc.
People have to waste so much time until they may have a working OS they are comfortable with using that in the end is nothing but W7 or W8.1 anyways.
This was never a thing in previous releases. Now people are worked up because of it...
W10 is the last windows !! ... maintaining only... the big plays are done in other fields now...
This shows mainly that they are very late to the party.
Ignoring Linux for decades and then realization comes.
Now they want some cake.

Microsoft has made a lot of mistakes in the last years but i don't see a future lock-down of Windows platform.
Anyway, It would be a clear act of abuse of dominance, wich is forbidden by the EU market regulations and surely the same goes for US.

It'd be hard to believe even MS would be that stupid. For now I'm far more willing to believe it really is just a security feature meant to generally limit the installation of all third party software. If it suddenly gets turned on by default, then it's time to get worried. Although that being said, in Android software only from the Play store is the default setting, I believe. I've never used iPhone, but knowing Apple I reckon it's even more restricted.

It's just going to be an option. Just like the one in Android. Personally, I hope more things do move to the Store but not everything. Games in particular need to have more freedom and still will if you choose the right option.

I would like an option to remove Windows Store and all forced "apps" for security reasons of course.

Why do people freak over something that
1. is optional
2. it doesn't block anything unless you wanted it to
3. we already have such prompts with the UAC

Windows 7 will live on this machine for years to come. I suspect my next OS isn't going to be Micro$oft though...
