Such a PR stunt. They already know how to improve products, because at one point in the design process of every bit of peripheral hardware they have, they saved money at the expense of longevity and/or repairability.

If they set the spare part prices high enough, they can make good profit while still pretend to be enviromentally conscious. At the end of the day, you never know if a customer will buy another product from the same company or switch to something else. If they keep buying replacement parts for their existing product, at least they won't give their money to a competitor.

If Logitech would be serious about that they would make the switch on their mice easily replaceable and would sell replacement on their web site. The amount of perfectly fine and 100% working mice i had to throw in the garbage in the last 15 years because of defective switches is crazy. They basically last 2-3 years of you game with them. They start double clicking and they are good for the garbage.

Still using a G500S 🙂 Got a brand new spare, and recently bought second hand which i cleaned and keep for parts. I should be set for life when it comes to my mouse.

nice mouse, but once you try wireless charging, you won't ever buy a wired one again.

Really comes down to anecdotes when we talk about mice. Have had only used Roccat for the last ~15 years and they were actually super reliable Kova+ (2009), Kova, Burst Pro. So 3 mice in 15 years; I would say they are good... BUT, they all died due a combination of abhorrent switches, poor repair skills and abussive use. They died due very hard button pressing while gaming / cleaning (I hate PoE an other game that forces you to keep holding your mouse button fu** them). Then "fixed" them with the good ol unfold gently the spring metal inside the switch, with really great succes, but since I'm super clumpsy, I broke it after 2-3 times I did the procedure. Then tried to desolder without proper tools, and ruined the circuit board, rendering the mouse pretty much useless; otherwise It would had lasted me +10 years. I have as well a logitech G302 from 2014, it was to change the kova+ (go figure, 5 years it lasted me the original kova+) and it was even more utterly sh*t, the buttons did not even last 6 months without making double click and the scroll wheel button just completely failed, was broke atm and could not afford it, so I decided to try again and change switches desoldering, this are quite easier than roccat in my experience (you need less heat to melt the solder in the logitech mouse, at least that noticed). Then moved to new roccat Kova, wich was a pleasure but started to have Logitech syndrome and buttons did not last over a year and a half, so here I come again with renewed trust about my soldering skill (or lack therefore) and burned and scratched again the circuit, even tho this time I used a pump. Well it was good while it lasted and decided to move to optical switches with the burst pro, yeah the switches has not failed AT ALL since day one although is true what mouse purists say about the lack of "cripness" of the switches, you simply lack that feedback of feeling the switch pushing back when you release the button or when you press it, it feels exactly like when a regular switches is "loose", but hey it does not fail, so you take some, you lose some.

I have a second Steelseries now. I like the mice otherwise, but they do use low quality switches. I needed to replace a switch in the old one, but got a too light-weight replacement, so I ended up buying a new mouse. A thumb button switch failed again after a couple of years, so I cannibalised a working, original swich from the older mouse. I guess I could try to actually open a switch the next time, to see if I can restore it by bending the metal, like hijodeosiris did. I certainly would have moved away from Steelseries if the new mouse hadn't been relatively cheap. I had a number of Logitech mice before Steelseries, and they never lost switches. I just needed to replace the mice in search of better features or because they became too worn out externally. However, I don't really like Logitech because the software is giant bloatware. Or at least was during the long years I had Logitech mice. Which is why I didn't keep the software installed. However, nowadays it could be more challenging to not have it installed.

I've always used Logitech mice and keyboards never had an issue with them my G502 Proteus Core is 5 years old and still performs as good now as it did on day one I did have a G402 Hyperion Fury for a long time before that which still works fine it's just a bit nasty on the outside before that I used an MS Intellimouse 3.0 which the switches finally died on me

Can't complain either about Logitech, just the volume wheel on their keyboards is fragile the one on my G710+ (used it for nearly 10 years) broke pretty quickly, but i got used to have fixed volume. I now have a Keychron Q6, but my mouse is still Logitech, the G500S.

I've only needed to clean my mouse switches with alcohol or contact cleaner. Spam clicking a few dozen times after has done the job for mice from a relative who's particularly hard on their mice. The longest lived mouse they had was a Razer Naga I gave them. It's working again after cleaning it but I swapped in another mouse since they didn't care about the extra functionality offered by the Naga. If cleaning the switches ever fails I'll try opening or desoldering and replacing.

Failing switches is indeed a matter of cleaning 99% of the time. Corrosion can form which can cause bad contact, mechanically these things can't really fail unless you use a hammer to do your mouse clicks.

I curently have the logitech g903 and that's the only logitech mouse i owned in the last 15 years that lasted me for more than 2-3 years. It's still not double clicking. But that's a very expensive mouse. All other logitech mouses i owned double clicked within 3 years at most. g603, g602, g700.

I don't know what's in the 903 LS but Logitech are notorious for using Chinese Omron switches which fail many times sooner than their ratings, particularly the 50 mil switches. It's only recently they started using optical switches. In the GPX they used Omron 20s since the 50s were exploding within weeks. I was so sick of their shit I went through the hassle of installing Kailh 8.0s in my GPX. For what it's worth, they always honor their warranties... unlike Steelseries which are thieves. As for Steelseries... don't get me started on them, they're the absolute worst of the worst. Utter garbage is offended that you'd compare Steelseries to them. I don't care if god himself comes to earth tell me about how great SS are, I will boycott them for life.
