So laser is passe now, is it? Too costly to produce anymore? Just seems strange technology has gone backwards a bit.

The G100s appears to be an entry-level "gaming" mouse...so an optical sensor would be expected. You don't generally see high dollar features on low priced products.

Most competitive gamers prefer optical over laser. Laser has problems tracking at high speeds for the most part, upping the DPI gives you negative mouse accel. Also a little hair gets caught in any of my laser mice and my mouse becomes useless, optical keeps going.

I've never had high speed tracking problems, DPI settings scale just as expected as well. Hair does rarely get caught up in the sensor area, which also affects my optical mice, but not as severly. Keeping a clean area for your mouse does work wonders for that issue however. I've been using laser mice since 2005 now and I wouldn't look back. I used both cheapo and high end optical mice before that. I like Logitech's move making a decent entry level mouse here, lets just hope the microswitches last longer than a month.

Asking him to provide a source shows you aren't in any competitive scenes. In the CS GO scene, optical mice like the Zowie AM and the DeathAdder 2013 are king. They simply track better than any laser mouse can. With that said, the differences are trivial and don't necessarily make you a better player. It just removes unnecessary frustration from negative acceleration.

Unlike some people may believe, laser has yet to achieve the same reliable performance as optical. The first generation of laser mice suffered from not being able to track at faster speeds. Logitech G5, Razer Copperhead, ... These mice would only track up to 1,25 to 1,5 meters/second. The newer generation of laser mice (Steelseries Sensei, Logitech G500, ...) can go up to 5 m/s in some cases but they have a new issue: Irregular acceleration, both negative and positive of around 5%. I'm not talking about the acceleration from the drivers you can set up, it's a built in bug in the Avago laser sensors that is being used in pretty much every of these mice. Unreliable tracking = useless for any gamer who's playing on a slightly higher level then just casual. In pure raw performance, gimmicks and features aside, the 2 best performing mice on the market atm are the Razer Deathadder and the Logitech G400. The Avage ADNS 3090 is also gaining more popularity and some mice perform close to the 2 aformentioned mice, although it varies depending on how well the firmware is programmed. ROCCAT Savu has some issues with some mousepads, but paired with the right mousepad for the job, it's on par with the G400 and deathadder. My main issue with the G100s is that they didn't increase the price and used a cheaper sensor instead of the one being used in the G400. Zowie mice are great if you don't reach speeds beyond 3,5 m/s. I hope they do fix it some day because I adore their shapes, but sadly I hit 4 m/s once in a while. On the Steelseries Laser mice, the acceleration issue seems less severe then on the Logitech G500. I can vouch for the quality of the G400! It is a very good mouse, although my first G400 had a cable issue, Logitech sent me another one without asking to get my mouse back. I decided to buy another G400 (I got the G400s), same thing, amazing... I also have a G500 and it sucks so much... The sensor placement... and the acceleration...

Optical? I had to double check the date of the article to see if this was new. I suppose optical technology now is better than when I first used it years ago. They'll be releasing ball mice next.

Yes optical, and it depends if you buy a quality mouse or not. MX518 used to be amazing for sooo many years and it still is pretty good today. I mean if you buy a $5-10 mouse you can't expect it to be perfect.

I briefly used a similar Logitech model mouse. Most of the Logitechs are a bit too small and low-profile for me . The Razer Death-Adder fits my hand better. To each his own.

Razer mice use either the same laser sensor with the acceleration issue or the phillips twin eye which has Z-Axis tracking issues. Deathadder uses a optical/infrared sensor, same as for the Abyssus. Scrollwheel broke for me after 6 to 8 months of use though for me with EVERY deathadder I've owned.

Same issues I had with the 3 I owned. Other than that, it's a damn good mouse. Right along with the Taipan.
