That's what I call good news.

All we need now is O-Led for PC... 24 Inch is big enough for me, Thank you.

Yeah man I know right..? Having an AMOLED screen on my phone I really feel like it has so much potential. I mean come on, the screen turns off in places where there's pure black. Contrast is ridiculous, looks so nice. And I've also read that OLED screens inherently have ridiculous response times (0.01ms) which paves the way for very high refresh rates aswell. In theory, this screen looks like a jack of all trades AND a master of all (maybe except lifespan, and the fact that blue OLEDs degrade faster than the rest). I have no idea why it's not being aggressively pushed into the monitor market. I would buy a 144Hz OLED in a heartbeat.

If it can keep proper state for 5 years then it is good enough for PC monitor. Because my 10 years old notebook has TN panel which has like 30% of original contrast ratio and 60% color saturation. And I do not expect monitor to last forever as I expect new/better technology to come by. If they now make 1080p 24" and 1440p 27" screens, in time they go bad, people will consider them morally obsolete on resolution basis/refresh rate (as they will come at best with 144Hz).

Fox, I've been researching into this since it got my attention. According to wikipedia, there have been experimental OLEDs released in 2007 (!) which have surpassed the lifespan of normal LCDs. Basically they said that the screen can output a luminance of 400cd/m2 for 62.000 hours for the blue OLEDs (the green and red ones last much more, but it doesn't matter because without one of them you'll lose color accuracy). So basically 62.000 hours without any decrease in brightness or color accuracy? That's really good considering LCDs range from 30.000 to 60.000 hours. So theoretically this shouldn't be a problem. And keep in mind that his was 8 years ago, even before OLED screens made their way into smartphones. If there are no problems with degradation, I seriously don't understand why they're holding OLED panels back. We have TVs but not monitors..?

Only pricing is holding it back. LG are market leader in OLED, other companies aren't even close to yield rates LG are hitting on large OLED screens. LG have patented their method for yield rates on mass production scale for OLED, so companies like Samsung trying come up with new methods, but still behind by maybe 18 month or more.

That actually makes sense and it's entirely plausible. I hope to see OLED displayes for our PCs soon.

Not interested until they are affordable and widely available.

Do you have pricing available at hand? I think we know nothing about that. It will for sure be more expensive than TN/IPS, because it looks better, and has better properties and it is new. But nothing tells if it would have affordable price tag on 24~32" 1080p/1440p.

Theoretically the manufacturing costs should be about the same as LCDs. But of course, that's not how it works. I'm pretty sure that the panels will be more expensive until they become widespread and completely replace LCDs. Let's face it, that is inevitable strictly from a technological point of view. Just like SSDs will replace HDDs sooner or later.

I want one of this things on PC as well 🙂 32" To be the least, 40" tops and up to 4k, Refresh rate as long as it is over 120 I will live, but I would pay 1k for an OLED for my PC. I guess I will have to wait till the prices reach my range to really get one.

Ill give you my kidney LG if you can give me a a 21:9 34 inch 3440x1440 120hz oled with freesync or gsync. PS I already am in love with my 25 inch 21:9 LG IPS panel.

more new on that OLED tech that introduce 10 years ago and it still not out widely available, and reasonable prices talking LCD/LED prices here and there still general only for large screen or the stupidly small things like smartphones

Don't rigid displays that thin have a very short life time? I would not dare to try to clean dust up for fear of breaking it.

Rigid..? OLED panels are flexible. This is why we have curved displays from LG or Samsung in both TVs and smartphones.

From the news I thought the flexible ones are based on a different technology (plastic OLED vs "common" OLED). Nice to know. "LG Display will keep its focus on large screens, with a plan to introduce an OLED panel as big as 99 inches within this year, the executive said. The company has released its 55-inch, 66-inch and 77-inch OLED models earlier in the year. It will also continue to upgrade its plastic OLED technology in the small- to mid-sized segments, such as transparent displays and rollable and flexible displays to be used for wearable devices or vehicle dashboards, according to Yeo."

Oh, I believe they were referring to the TVs themselves. The panel itself is just a thin foil, pretty much like you see in that video 🙂.
