Yeah. It's not like they're going to have a low-end card pushing power requirements to the limit. Previous rumors put the 480 at 110W and the 480X at 130W. If that holds true, it's impressive and competitive with Pascal.

amd and their async compute... they need a better way to market. Consumers arent going to run ashes of the singularity benchmarks all day.

It's not. AMD typically has more cores and therefore more FLOPS than comparable Nvidia cards, so this will be a lot weaker than the 1070. It'll consume noticeably less power than the 1070 as well. This is a GP106 competitor. These specs put it about 7% faster than an R9 390.

It's also the reason why AMD users tend to be so passionate about defending their favorite brand. It's not like nvidia ones are much different, but the edge is definitely at AMD. :P

Or 10% slower then my 290x. In terms of tflops. But for sure that won't be all there is to it.

Polaris is a 232mm2 chip. Too big a difference for it to match the 1070's 314mm2 chip. I believe AMD is focusing on the mid-range market where the real money is. Who cares about performance crowns when your deep in debt and need to make money to survive.

And the Titan X has 6.1Tflops compared to the 1070 of 7.2TFlops yet they are on par pretty much, in some cases the 1070 is behind the Titan X.

Also notice how the slide compares it to the 970/980? WSJ article below says its its going to cost $199. If so then performance may be in the 970/980 region. Disappointing for those expecting more, but should sell very well.

They're manufactured on a different process and the 1070 does not have all units enabled so the die size doesn't matter - not really good for comparision. Full Polaris 10 will have more cores (therefore more transistors used and "active") than in the 1070.

how did you figure that's where "the real money is"? i would argue that demand for low to mid range dGPU is rapidly decreasing with iGPU becoming ever more powerful. casual people can already play pretty much any indie game on iGPU with decent performance, and even well optimized games like ones from Blizzard or Valve. and if you don't game then iGPU is perfect for every single consumer task you can think of - browsing, youtube, htpc, office apps, etc. low end dGPU is already made obsolete by iGPU and soon low-mid range dGPU will also be made obsolete.
