As much as I dislike how Apple runs their business, and they do try to unfairly kill off the completion, you would have to be clueless to say they stifle technology.
I think the rise of Samsung might be to blame for this, but it used to be the Apple users who were the most obnoxious, but these days its Android owners, puts me right off admitting to be an Android fan.
People pick the phone that works best for them, so why shouldn’t they get the iPhone5??
The top Android phones are expensive and tie you into contracts for several years, that’s a huge risk for an existing Apple user to take for a phone they might not like, especially when they are going to an OS that has less software support as IOS will always take top priority when developing the majority of the apps.
Most will admit the iPhone5 is very underwhelming compared to the 4S, but the Galaxy S3 is also underwhelming compared to the S2, and that didn’t stop the S3 ending up being more successful.
Slave labour stuff is irrelevant as every company indulges in it, you would have to be very naive to think only a few do.
Not that I have a problem with it anyway, without it big companies would make things locally, which would mean even higher prices for consumers, and these people would be out of work and unable to support their family.

Lets face it though.
Apple try to un-fairly kill off companies like you say.
But then again so does Google.
They buy a lot of companies to kill off their competition, or just get rid of them.
They've bought Sparrow a Mac email client and now that doesn't get any more updates to work in their Gmail stuff.
Social Media companies to kill off any competition with Google+ to try make it stronger to target Facebook.
Bought a number of other search companies so they don't compete with their searches.
Multiple Online advertising places again to take away competition away from Adsense.
I'm sure some of it gets integrated into their software, but a lot it will be strategic moves to make sure they avoid competition and grow in market share.
All companies do it. There's no nice company. They may start out saying they are. And how we support people. But in the end. It's a company, and companies need to be producing money otherwise it's pointless. And to do that. Toes need to be stood on along the way.
I think you've a bit naive if you believe Apple are the only one. Again. Seems like people just like to pick on Apple. I mean. You have to have someone to target your hatred to.
How many dodgy things have Microsoft done over the years. Be hard to count them.

I never said they were alone in this as Google have clearly ditched their "Don't be Evil" motto, but at present Google are the lesser of the three evils when compared to Apple and MS.
Samsung are also willing to do things you previously didn't think they would, but considering Samsung and Apple are breaking records, while HTC, Nokia and Sony are bleeding money, i don't blame them.
Not that is why i choose Android products, i favour it as it's a more open and fun OS for me, morality has nothing to do with any my purchases and i think most who say it does tend to be hypocrites.
I doubt many of them would pay more a "Fair Trade" product that had identical specs.

gonna use my iPhone 4 until it breaks, then who knows what phone i'll wind up with (or when for that matter)

If I didn't have a 4S I would've bought the 5 .. boo hoo Droids.

^^ If i didnt have SG2 i would have bought SG3... boo hoo Apples :P 😀
But to be honest people like different things. I didnt like iOS and iphone and as much as i love Android i really want to try Nokia next. If you think about it, with Nokia coming back to the scene, we are spoilt for choice now 😀

This may sound mad to some of you but the only reasons i don't use apple is because of the following 3.
1. You cannot turn of Wifi in 1 simple move.
2. you cannot turn of bluetooth is one simple move
3. you cannot turn of 3g in one simple move.
the fact that you have to go through so many steps to achieve simple tasks bugs me, i just like to push a button and go...... This is why i like using Android phones because of the Widget based system.
Maybe the only reason Apple wont use a widget based OS is because they may get sued by the inventor of the Widgets.

The last 10 or so smart phones I've owned in the last few years have ALL been Android. Why? Freedom, ability to customize anything & everything as I please, no restrictions, widgets, copy & paste, bluetooth transfer to and from any device, mass media storage, memory card slot, etc...

I would be fine with Apple products if they didn't charge up the wazoo for them. Like, even with a contract it costs like $400 to get the Iphone 5. What kind of nonsense is that. I don't understand who would ever want to pay that much for a phone that is marginally better if at all than what Samsung is offering.

I can understand these numbers.
There are a lot of preorders - both by people who want their first iPhone / next iPhone (and current is old one) / next iPhone (cause they want iEverything). There are people who get iPhone 5 because they think it may be a good upgrade, offering some new features or the same stuff in a better way, and some people who buy it no matter what or because other will laugh at them because they have 4S.
Many people also buy iPhone, because they've already had older iPhone, they don't want to learn new platform or buy software again. If I was getting new phone, it would be probably Android-powered, even if Win8 phone was slightly better. Why? Cause I've already bought some software for that.
Now - is 2M a good number? Considering how much this phone costs to make compared to how much you pay (and it's not $300 but much more, as part of the price is paid in monthly bills), and how much (or how little) has changed, it's a great financial success for Apple.
However, if we compare it to sum of first 24h sales of all Android-powered phones during last year, or all Samsung phones, perhaps it's not that impressive number. I also think that given the diversity of non-iMarket, people don't buy stuff blindly on the first day, but instead wait for the reviews, competitive products, then read, compare and choose, making sales during whole product life more meaningful.

I feel like it's important to point out that in the US the big carriers do NOT provide any sort of discount for "bring your own phone" plans. If you don't upgrade every 2 years when you are eligible the carriers are basically stealing money from you. When your contract runs out it isn't like in other countries where you no longer pay a surcharge for the phone. In the past I have simply preordered an iPhone and then sold it because it was a quick way to pay for a few months of my contract and I was happy with my current phone.
