They had that name for at least a decade, even my old EVGA PSU bought February 28th 2014 has that name, still installed and running in my current rig.

G2, G3 SuperNovas were good. What followed them were downgrades essentially.

I have a platinum supernova, one of the best purchases I ever made, It is really an immortal piece of hardware. I would never touch anything below platinum, though I wish I'd have waited for a titanium one instead. Gold ones are for the plebeians for many years now. High risk, no ROI ever.

Gold, Plat, etc are only efficiency indicators, not necessarily quality. Some silvers or bronze can be better quality than some golds of different manufacturers. But generally as manufacturers focus on efficiency improvements, it only makes sense to use better parts, caps, as the most efficient are also their higher end, costlier models

Mine is the EVGA SuperNOVA 1000 G2, did read good things about it back then before purchasing it.
1000W was way more than I needed and still way more than what I need today, so think it pays of to buy a PSU with a good user rating and way more capacity than one needs.

Technically that's true as peak efficiency is usually at around 50% load.
