If we're getting laptops with SSDs soldered on the mobo and no further storage expansion capabilities just to extort the customer I'm going to throw a very immature hissy fit. Something similar to how laptop manufacturers were extorting money when you bought a laptop with a larger SSD from factory. You want 512GB instead of 256? That's an extra 200 bucks, even though the whole SSD is less than that. I'm mentioning this because anything's possible when Intel is involved.

Aren't BGA already how SSD chips are connected to the board anyways? For instance, the SATA SSD and the m.2 SSD to the left of the picture have boards with chips connected to them, isn't that already BGA? You missed the point, that small one is not NAND chip, but a complete SSD in BGA format.

I'm not seeing where it says that. All i see there is a chip that mounts in BGA, just like most RAM-type storage do these days. Plus, this would really be no different then what they've been using in many ultra-small laptops and phones. Either way, if it is, or isn't, a complete package, there's nothing new in that, so i'm not sure what the worry is.

Market forces may well dictate how this is taken up, personally i wouldnt buy a laptop where i couldn't upgrade/change the storage or RAM but there are punters who would.

The entire chip is a standalone SSD. The example you have attached shows several chips soldered in BGA format on a PCB where the entire PCB represents the SSD. With Intel's latest release, the controller, DRAM (if present), and NAND are all on the same chip. As for ultra-small laptops and phones, it should be the same if a single-chip solution is used.

Yeah but the price difference is usually reasonable nowadays (not for macbooks of course, only for other ultrabooks because Apple are a bunch of twats). It used to be much worse when SSD laptops weren't as common even though SSD prices weren't that high anymore. I remember I bought a 256SSD on a $700 laptop back then. Fuck the po-lice.
