I didnt think it would happen this soon. Hopefully they can think of a better method than LGA1155 before 2014.

Intel always comes up with crap ideas. I hope amd will rise again and help us from this BGA BS.

And there's the death of the pc market....

Isnt the whole idea of a Desktop computer to have interchangeable parts ? I understand for a laptop but still...... faster connection to move data ???

When this happens, the motherboard will simply come with the processor. You can still add other components and peripherals. I imagine Intel will revert to an upgrade method they talked about a while back, using codes to determine the CPUs performance. If you pay more you can start off with a faster CPU or upgrade later.

Its not so much a crap idea, but a way of avoiding bad contacts with very small contact points. Its possible they can avoid having to do it if a new method of reliably connecting the motherboard and CPU are developed that doesnt result in easy accidental damage.

They just single handedly killed the desktop and enthusiast markets if they do this across the board. It makes sense in the low-end, low power market segments, but not mid-range and up. deltatux

Intels making the wrong move....they will sink themselves.

This doesn't make sense at all. I'll believe it when I see it happen, maybe what they mean to say is that 'broadwell' will come in BGA packages for certain applications, considering they would still have to deliver socketed parts for servers.

If this happens it will go a long ways towards shooting the little guy (like me) right between the eyes. People won't bring me a computer for an upgrade if no upgrade path is available... they will instead go to Best Buy and get a brand new one. That person will spend more money over time and I won't have anything either. 🙁

I only see this happening for their lower end processors.

According to rumor, it will affect "mainstream" and lower....not the high-end market. Of course, if Intel releases Haswell on a new socket, it will piss customers off when they dump money into Haswell just to have no upgrade path later.

I... I may kill myself if they take away my interchangeable processors. This better not happen right now.

This is the worst news i have ever seen on my internet feed. Thanks as i pray to god this doesnt happen, if anything the video card compaines need to go socket....not intel doing the reverse....whats next? computers with integrated memory? with what 1-2 options? **** that dude. i am out and will never buy a pc part ever, and will tell everyone to just boycott tech and go outside and enjoy the lives that god gave us anyways.

^yea. That's better idea. 'go green' ... Leave ur pc buy a BGA ultrathin laptop and live in amazon with monkey-tarzans. That is intel's moto.

totally agree. Even if they do BGA crap in midrange cpus then they will ruin themselves. Cause, still amd has good cpus in that segment.

ASUS i7570K-Pro8 TOP 4Ghz Quad core (overclocked out fo the box!) 8GB DDR4 3200 Ram (also overclocked!) boxes would feel/look liek video card boxes D:

Heh, probably why Otellini plans to bail out on May 2013. =b And for some reason I'm getting flashback of Pentium II processors...

Guys if this does happen it won't be as bad as it sounds. We will still have enthusiast boards etc, but they will come with different performance cpu's directly on them. If it makes things cheaper on the long run, why not? As long as companies like ASUS, EVGA, MSI, etc keep making the enthusiast boards to go with them it'll be fine. Sure it sounds crappy, but if it does happen, it won't be as bad as people think. Not that I want it to.
