Steam surveys 🙄

It does highlight the potential size of fall AMD is about to inflict, though this one would be helped along by the willingness of Steam users to upgrade. We'll see a better indicator in examining new build/production data sets. It's certainly going to be a interesting time ahead providing Matisse (and Navi) deliver, and the indicators look good.

Intel still owns laptop market. Even if AMD owned all desktops, intel would still have statistical advantage.

If you're in the market for a new PC the best choice for a good price all rounder is definitely AMD, unless you're into high refresh gaming where Intel is still king. Unfortunately this doesn't tell us something we don't already know. Intel has dominated the market for the past 5-6 years, with only the recent year with ryzen having AMD to offer something of value. You don't turn the lake into beer with only a few pints. Give it some time and stuff will even out. On a side-note, stuck with 2500k for 5 years or so cause there wasn't much reason to upgrade, even 7600k was only a marginal improvement. Bought a 1700 at launch and now i'm itching to buy a 3800x or maybe 3850x if rumours are to be believed. Intel did not offer anything interesting for 5 years. Since ryzen AMD is already offering something good within the second "tick"

This stats are most dependent on normal players, no guys with highend, AMD could score with Raven Ridge 2200G/2400G or cheap athlons, but launch was botched - with classical AMD problems- no or old drivers, no Windows 7 drivers, bios issues, we wanted half a yeah for proper Linux videocard support.. no proper advertising, problems with availability.

Steam servey uses all systems.... also the ones that are no longer in use, so Steam servey is not acurate. That is why Intel/NVIDIA systems are always in the lead there... And the main reson Intel/NVIDIA fanshills love Steam Servey

For an hour I was worried that gurus will not explain those surveys...

Source ? Since steam requests user info periodically, I thought each Survey release was only the latest data. Not including historical. If it included historical the numbers would be astronomical. Essentially including all previous machines people have owned.

This is wrong. It only counts systems that have been online in a defined period (and logged into Steam). If its never online anymore, it'll fall out of the stats. This can be easily seen with moving targets like Windows versions. If it would count every inactive system ever, then old Windows versions would never actually reduce in popularity.

A stat I'd be more interested in seeing is what the conversion rate between Intel and AMD is, as in how many people are switching from an Intel machine to an AMD one, and vice versa. I try not to pick sides and am just glad there's real competition again.

Will the high refresh concern be mostly alleviated if the Ryzen 3000 series clocks up to around 5Ghz, or does it have to do with the Infinity Fabric latency? Never really understood this fully.

This would be my thoughts as well, the vast majority of gamers don't build a full new rig every 2/3 years. At most they'll swap out some components like GPU's and storage but keep the same CPU and chipset, assuming they are desktops. https://photos.app.goo.gl/KMrmaqgac9vvL4nEA If you look through the hardware survey the vast majority of Intel CPU's are less than 4 cores and the majority have < 3Ghz base(?) frequency. Which tells me they're either laptops or older (2+ generations) desktops

That's going to change this year though.

It is a FACT (intel ahead)..... i think steam pointed this out just for "awareness"..... But whatever, considering value for money, NONE is better [actual CPUs]...;)

Not surprised Linux's AMD marketshare is going up. Not only does Ryzen overall perform better in Linux vs Windows (especially for stuff like the 2990WX), but Intel's performance has really been tanking due to the security mitigations (to my understanding, Intel has more vulnerabilities under Linux).

I'm actually surprised at the people who quote the Steam survey religiously. It's not an automatic survey, it's 100% voluntary--and I for one haven't indulged it for many years, it just never occurs to me--and it's a long, long way away from being inclusive of either Intel's or AMD's cpus in use globally. Steam does not survey your hardware without asking for permission first--never has--and I am sure I'm not the only person who declines that invitation. As paranoid as people have become about "sharing info" on the 'net, it's probably a sizable, significant number who do not allow themselves to be counted. Also, It's when they *break it down* by separate cpus and by separate gpus that you can see how silly the whole thing is, imo--it almost says the *opposite* of the aggregate numbers. Aside from everything I've mentioned, this is the kind of thing that also happens with the Steam survey: https://segmentnext.com/2018/05/03/steam-hardware-survey-fixed/

Totally agree! There's no stats on users playing cracked games (non-steam)...yet another question.
