Some of the 470s have 8 pin connectors, so it's not unusual. It's a potential boon for overclocking if nothing else.

Rumor is better clock potential, I think even the reference might have 8 pin, cant remember though. probably wrong.

There's a lot more to overclocking potential than the PCI-E connector. Core VRM, VRAM VRM, VRM phases quality (mosfets used etc), their amount and not to mention the silicon lottery just to name a few. Still, why not slap a 8pin on the PCB, it won't do anything detrimental.
