but with less speed 🙂 I would not mind a 4 port raid for way less than 600 dollars. I can't see how a board with an heatsink and a controller should cost that much. I would also be fine with just an adapter to expand my storage, without raid.

I think you misread - the 8TB max refers to each individual drive. You can fit 8 drives on this card, so max 64TB of storage, with less usable depending on the RAID configuration.
