Now all we need is for them to get on that 8k HDMI 3.0 cable. Won't this still require point A and point B to have HDMI 2.0 spec sockets?

It will of course require HDMI2.0+ sockets if you want 60Hz. You can do 30Hz or heavily color compressed over < 2 if you really want to (and who would?!).

Which cards support the 2.0 standard right now, any? If not, I can't imagine there are any current 4k TV's that do.

I believe Fury does, but only through DP which there are no adapters for that... Does the 980ti? That would be the only other one I could think of that does.

All the 9 cards support HDMI 2.0. Take a look here, http://www.geforce.com/whats-new/articles/maxwell-architecture-gtx-980-970 If you look under New, Better Ways To Play it says that Maxwell supports HDMI 2.0. My guess then is it is the 950 and up. I am not sure if any of the AMD GPU's support it. I think all of the AMD ones that have a HDMI port support 1.4 which is 4k at 30hz not 4k at 60hz like in 2.0. I could be wrong on that, but it is everything I have found so far.

My guess then is it is the 950 and up. /QUOTE] My 980 GTX supports 2.0 and does well with my 4K TV, BUT I did need to get a newer HDMI cable because my old one would not transmit 4k at 60Hz (would do ok at 30Hz but all kinds of graphical anomalies at 60Hz). Clearly all HDMI cables are *not* created equal, so it's good there's a new certification IMO.

Its good yes but It makes me wonder how much it will be enforced. Whats stopping ppl from selling cables for say $5 and saying they are but they aren't. Hopefully there is something to stop ppl from selling cables and saying they are but are not.

Only Maxwell 2.0 cards support HDMI 2.0 natively. So that's the Geforce 900 Series. Nothing from AMD or Intel (incl. Skylake) does.

Well nothing really. Ebay will be chock full of "HDMI 2.0 certified" yulong ding dong cables which may or may not work.
These cables will carry a tamper-proof, anti-counterfeit label

I use HDMI 2.0 on my UHD TV with my 980tis. The picture is incredible and the games I've been playing run at a butter smooth 60 FPS. Just do your research. It took me forever to find the right tv and a few hours of reading reviews before I boight the HDMI 2.0 cable. I guess this certification will make that process easier. I had to rely on user reviews. Especially since 15ft cables didn't seem to work right.

HDMI should have been dropped, its a licensed technology that everyone has to pay to use and pay to advertise, if an item has HDMI they have to display the logo on the box. I know it won't happen to entrenched. DP is the way to go, feature wise and everything.
