Mm, hope prices will return to release levels soon. Looking to do a complete new build and its for this reason im chosing to start with CPU/MB/RAM rather than GFX card..

Yeah, I still wouldn't want to be in need of a new GPU. At least the actually usable video cards still cost a lot. However, aside from the mining idiocy, there's also the issue of VRAM supply running dry and thus increasing the prices further.

All things to do with memory is sky high. Just bought 16GB of DDR4, 500GB 960EVO and a 1TB Intel 600p. That cost me more than my 1080ti.

All I want is a graphics card but I'll be damned if I pay $800+ (Canada) for a 1.5 year old not-even-top-end nVidia card. I'm hoping the 1070 Ti will have non-insane prices but what are the odds, and even then I'd still be buying ancient technology.
It won't happen until there are chips designed solely for mining Ethereum.

yeah prices are pretty high, specially on AMD side... think the only card's not to be touched too much by this are either the non-gaming cards or maybe the 1080ti (or if it has it's only increased a bit)

yeah it's a strange meeting of trends between mining and A.I. hitting a natural refresh point (5x new architectures and processes for cpu in two years). the middlemen (vendors) are loving it as they are the ones pocketing the mark up on memory ics.

Newegg shows cards like the RX 580 and Vega are fully stocked, and prices are back to normal levels. I would say the mining craze is all but over.

That would be US im assuming? Here in Austria unfortunately an MSI RX580 8gb which was at the 290€ mark not that long ago still fetches around 340€ today...

The RX 580 4GB launch price was $199. Cheapest on newegg is $249 for a 6+ month old card. No, the prices are not back to normal levels.

I recall Nvidia stating some time ago that due to the expensive VRAM, they expect their cards to only get more expensive towards the end of the year. There's little AMD could do to avoid the same situation. I imagine that's one big reason why, for example, the 1070 is still more expensive over here than it was before the mining craze despite the craze clearly having calmed down already. Although I'm not sure if this is the case at all in the USA. I tend not to stare too much at the US prices because they are so depressingly low compared to ours.

Take into consideration that US prices don't include taxes (each state have their own), and also don't include Europe's 2 year minimum warranty, etc.

in addition, cities and counties along with states may levy taxes (i.e. mass transit, roads, stadia)
for example, taxes where i live (Palo Alto, Santa Clara County, California) are higher than 50 miles to the north because the county bought into B.A.R.T. (commuter train/subway) 25 years late. In Marin County the sales tax is a full percentage point lower.
so you could pay, depending on where you live, 7.25% to 8.75% sales tax just in California.
but there are also states with no sales tax at all.
