It's a pretty solid move on Microsofts part. By bringing these people into the fold hopefully they can get them to purchase cheaper apps on the store. + Any marketshare is good for a company when data is basically the most lucrative asset on the market for tech companies.

Why not just offer it for free then?

Because you will lose all the money from the people willing to pay. This actually makes a lot of sense. It's just like how they lost money with XBox. They're going to increase their adoption rate and market share. Don't forget that starting from Windows 8, MS has an app store. This gives them literally millions of new customers for their app store.

I guess they figure anyone who has pirated Windows 7/8 would just pirate Win 10 anyway but this way there's a chance that those people might purchase something from their crappy App store. Good move... I think. We'll see.

Hah, thats a smart move.

This would be a decent plan, if they didn't publicly announce it. But since they did, this plan is now idiotic. They're basically encouraging people to pirate Windows now, because as of right now there is no penalty. Makes me wonder if there's something they aren't telling us.

Very clever marketing. I've noticed alot of polished apps within the Windows 10 alpha which have select in-app marketing. If they get everyone on board they would make a killing on app & advertising revenue.

Now that... just might get 80-90% of Windows user on Win10 in the first year.

Will this be for all version of windows (xp, vista), or just 7 and 8?

Win 10 in Cahoots with NSA - give it away, more people will bite

In a country where above 90% of the PCs run pirated Win, the only chore was to reactivate from time to time. Giving free pass for the OS is nice as otherwise it'll just be cracked.

Free upgrade doesn't mean legit copy. They want people to move fast to Win10, so if they didn't do that, many would stay on legacy systems. I have yet to see any info about giving Windows away for free. So far it looks like pirated copies will get upgraded to Win10, but use of them would continue to be illegal. It's kinda like placing goods with a tip box without admission.

That was the first thing which came to mind.

So is every other platform/service/hardware. Unless you physically develop the chip and write the software, you can probably be monitored.

With Retina scan and Face recognition available as login options, i'm not surprised. Only "The Cloud" will be capable of recognising face and iris, so it will just "have" to be stored on their servers. Biometrics is a good login, but a really bad password. Microsoft want as many people to update and use Win10. I will be migrating my Win7 to Win10, since its my gaming PC. It will be going offline though, and only be online when absolutely needed. I've set up a linux laptop for web surfing/online consumption, and another linux box for media consumption (Home network/Nas only). Nowadays, its probably better to just go by the adage "Trust No-one", but the Truth is no longer out there. Its buried 300 feet down where no-one will ever find it again 🙂

Now I'm thinking i shouldn't buy/upgrade at all actually.

i think that it takes the piss out of use that dont pirate our operating systems and have paid money.

They try to take back lost ground from non commercial users because companies will have to pay for them again( <- MS budget' target group ). Maybe there is a catch, however we home users) will only benefit from it (hopefully that the "catch" won't be like trashy apps running on background regardless of user's choice),future will show. And for all of people that have second thought for upgrading..remember that we will "need" dx12 so it's one way road..

How was there a penalty before? I mean, sure, you could get caught and whatever, but I can't recall hearing one case of who that has happened to.. counterfitting or using illegitimate windows OS has been around with practically every version. Plus, how else are they going to try to gain the favor of losing so many customers with Windows 8? They have to announce it and make known somehow.. Obviously making a television spot or something may be pushing it, but letting users know through their website/interviews would be the best method now that they've commited to this move.
