It's a pretty solid move on Microsofts part. By bringing these people into the fold hopefully they can get them to purchase cheaper apps on the store. + Any marketshare is good for a company when data is basically the most lucrative asset on the market for tech companies.

Why not just offer it for free then?

Because you will lose all the money from the people willing to pay.
This actually makes a lot of sense. It's just like how they lost money with XBox. They're going to increase their adoption rate and market share. Don't forget that starting from Windows 8, MS has an app store. This gives them literally millions of new customers for their app store.

I guess they figure anyone who has pirated Windows 7/8 would just pirate Win 10 anyway but this way there's a chance that those people might purchase something from their crappy App store. Good move... I think. We'll see.

Hah, thats a smart move.

This would be a decent plan, if they didn't publicly announce it. But since they did, this plan is now idiotic. They're basically encouraging people to pirate Windows now, because as of right now there is no penalty. Makes me wonder if there's something they aren't telling us.

Very clever marketing. I've noticed alot of polished apps within the Windows 10 alpha which have select in-app marketing. If they get everyone on board they would make a killing on app & advertising revenue.

Now that... just might get 80-90% of Windows user on Win10 in the first year.

Will this be for all version of windows (xp, vista), or just 7 and 8?

In a country where above 90% of the PCs run pirated Win, the only chore was to reactivate from time to time. Giving free pass for the OS is nice as otherwise it'll just be cracked.

Now I'm thinking i shouldn't buy/upgrade at all actually.

i think that it takes the piss out of use that dont pirate our operating systems and have paid money.

They try to take back lost ground from non commercial users because companies will have to pay for them again( <- MS budget' target group ). Maybe there is a catch, however we home users) will only benefit from it (hopefully that the "catch" won't be like trashy apps running on background regardless of user's choice),future will show.
And for all of people that have second thought for upgrading..remember that we will "need" dx12 so it's one way road..
