How was there a penalty before? I mean, sure, you could get caught and whatever, but I can't recall hearing one case of who that has happened to.. counterfitting or using illegitimate windows OS has been around with practically every version. Plus, how else are they going to try to gain the favor of losing so many customers with Windows 8? They have to announce it and make known somehow.. Obviously making a television spot or something may be pushing it, but letting users know through their website/interviews would be the best method now that they've commited to this move.
You pretty well have to be caught selling pirated copies of Windows like a local shop did. They were caught selling pirated copies of Windows98, ME and 2K. If you're pirating for personal use, it would cost more to go after you, than they make off the licensing so they generally don't bother.

The way of making apps for Win10 got simplified a lot, and improved, but it's Win10-only path. It's very clear for me that it's better for MS to upgrade Windows for everyone. And legality: In some countries there are random "scans" for pirated software and/or movies etc, but MS doesn't initiate them. Also, you can have serious issues with tax office and law enforcement representatives if you use illegal software to earn money. The fact that MS will upgrade illegal Windows copies doesn't mean that it's ok to obtain them in such way. If you buy something and your neighbor steals the same thing, you shouldn't be sorry about your purchase. While I can be less critical about usage of pirated Windows in homes in countries where a cost of such software is comparable with a monthly salary, one can get refurb rig with preinstalled Windows or use other free system. Also, I don't think it's that bad to get software in illegal way, then decide to delete it or buy. But using pirated software in order to earn money is what people should be ashamed for.

In the past, I've pirated quite a bit of software just to "demo" it. In the end, if the software accomplished what I needed, I purchased it. If it couldn't do what I needed, I deleted it. The cost of some software is just flat out insane and makes the "buy before you try" system cost prohibitive.

Not really a theory. A local shop got caught selling PC's with pirated copies of Windows98, ME and 2K. They got sued by MS and fined $10M....

That's what I do, no demo then I hit torrents, if its good, I buy, if it's crap I uninstall - Id be very p1ssed if Id paid for every PoS Ive demo'd

I needed AutoCAD for a project I was working on. Fortunately, they offer a trial. If there hadn't been a free trial, I'd have hit the torrents to get a copy. It was a personal project so it's not like I was going to profit from it and their pricing is just pure insanity. You can "rent" AutoCAD for $210/month or get a Prepetual License for $4195..... In either case, with their pricing my project would have never gotten done.

I guess they figure anyone who has pirated Windows 7/8 would just pirate Win 10 anyway but this way there's a chance that those people might purchase something from their crappy App store. Good move... I think.
I dunno what the under lying security and control for the app are but surely someone who is willing to use a pirated OS isn't going to have an issue pirating apps or better yet just using the free alternative. What I can say is that as a legit paying customer of both Win 7 and Win 8 (specifically because I was getting a free update to 10) MS can kiss good bye to any future cash from my wallet.

it makes sense! it will cut out the counterfeiters that sell almost genuine looking copies and others selling the damn 6 month licences as full keys. i have been had by them on eBay! payed a decent price for a key and less then six months my copy was unactivated!

My Windows OSs have been genuine since around Vista iirc, but Ive never paid a penny for any of them, I got a free TechNet account by signing up to some IT Tech Momentum program, was auto renewed the next year, and I requested and successfully had it renewed the year after, so I ended up with 3 years worth of TechNet keys Then people Id given keys to throughout those years returned the favour when my subscription ended before Windows 8 arrived, and gave me a couple of 8/8.1 keys that I use today

To me this just must stupide thing, Why not just give every one a full/upgrade copy and been done with it after all if going to make it free why go all out and not half @$$ about it, I'm petty sure this not going stop the pirate camp. 1: By the way did one even ask if upgrades can be use as to fully wipe format the hard drive install and still qualifying when booting off dvd disc. 2: I see this as problem what happing if we lose our harddrive or motherboard after the one year will the assign key code still work if not DON'T WASTE our time as I sure it will be a @#$% nightmare for some people. I still think MS better is just off just selling a low cost full ver copy at around $20/30 for life of the OS support in tell the next major ver comes a long and been done with it that can be install on any system.

That offer look fishy if you ask me.
Now that... just might get 80-90% of Windows user on Win10 in the first year.
And then drop to less than 10% after the free year is done when people realize they have to pay a licence to keep using W10. Most of the illegal users will probably return to previous version or find a crack for Windows 10 at that point.

Generally the same for me.. This is why Its sad that game developers no longer offer demos and instead only offer pre-orders. Goes without saying that offering demos would cut down a lot on piracy since many people once trying the game through demo would either buy it and play it, or just not play it at all. Sure, some would still pirate it, but it would be minimized for sure.

this is not new to me and i will tell you why have real copy of windows 7 but could not find my key (still cant lol) installed windows 7 using a hooky key did not acivate it bought 4 download copys of windows 8 upgrade for 24.99 each from microsoft windows 8 download promotion website on same credit card and on the same day also ticked the option to include 1 copy on dvd when the dvd disk turned up, i simply booted from windows 8 disk waited for the option to deletete disk partion and deleted it then letb windows 8 install then activated it bingo even upgrade the windows 8 to 8.1 no issues todate.

Will they be removing/disabling all the spyware from it like Key logging/web traffic collection/speech collection/lists of files you've opened/list of software you've installed etc?
