it's about time. there will be initial grousing and i will be one of the folks hit hardest (android, 2 laptops, iPad, and PC) but i forgive Google because they made their browser system agnostic and my bookmarks and PW's work effortlessly across devices. which is probably why two-step is so necessary.

I highly recommend people use an app authenticator and not SMS for 2fa.

Two-step verification will be available for 150 million Google accounts by the end of the year, the internet giant announced in a blog post on Tuesday. As a result, users are better protected against ... Google to turn on two-step verification for 150 million accounts
Bit odd that they put it as "will be available". Been using two factor up against Google for years already.

None of this is for the "safety of your account/data", and never will be.

Two step definitely improve the security of your account.

Yeah because 2FA does nothing, k.

I'm all for security but do we really want all these big companies to actually have your phone number now as well as everything else they already know about you? Call me cynical but there is nothing they want more than to verify their anonymous users identities with a much harder to fake phone account which they can verify. Makes user data much more valuable to these companies - A billion anon accounts vs a billion verified with phone numbers from carriers accounts....

Exactly. It's the only reason the authenticators are on your phone and it widely available on other systems. Sure, it can improve security, but that's it why they care about it.

You can basically use any authenticator app, just use one that gives you a code, no phone number involved ever. With a webcam you can even install one on the PC and use it from there. Just need something that supports Google's code generation and can scan the QR code. EDIT: Heck, as I just recall it might even be possible without the QR code, think Google also gives a numbered code that can be entered to link the authenticator. Remember to save the backup codes Google give you after linking.

You don't have to use a phone..

Indeed. Maybe a bit overkill, but most if not all countries in the EU use close to double 2 factor authentication for simple shopping on the net. Guess to many people jumped on scams and the like, so they added additional security.

Which just happens to bind your formerly anonymous account to a phone most often. I assume I will get replies of "you were never anonymous" and while that is correct, I was also never spied upon by corporate scum every single day. I will always prefer the OG days of computing, where only nerds were "allowed" online because only they knew how to jump through hoops, and merchant stuff was kept to a minimum, there was no insta for idiots to post their life on, and generally exposing private info was considered anathema and shunned upon. I use 2FA BTW, but that was MY CHOICE, voluntary, and only on my "main" accounts. All these corporations need to be stomped out of existence. Since the West can't do it, my hopes are with China.

Don't use a mobile telephone... does this mean I am being locked out from my email?

No, what I mentioned doesn't work the way you seem to think since it has no connection to corporate scums, besides that there are other options than using phones. The only link is between the ID authority and the bank, btw. the ID validation is going to be replaced now and does require a valid passport. If people didn't scam people (some of the phishing attempts can be really though to see through for the average user), steal credit cards, put scanners into ATM's and the like all this wouldn't be necessary. Besides, if you don't post your life anywhere on systems that are connected to the internet there isn't really much to come for is there? 😉 Some of them nerds that know the loopholes are also those who made the tools available that make others able to feck around.

Any day lmao. The CCP is thousands of miles from me. If I am to give my data to the NSA, CIA (or anything Western) OR the CCP, I'd choose the CCP without exceptions. How would that impact my life?

In various ways , if your activities are deemed harmful to the government even ban you from using any kind of fast transportation services or banking ! Dear lord save your soul if you make fun of whinny the ping ! Yeah nsa etc spy on too but being out rising middle finger to your government has no negative effects towards you as far the crowd you are with does not get violent and start actively breaking the law .... Roaming around forum talking against your government with out backlash other than arguing with other people is already proof you enjoy freedom of speech something that is not true to ANY authoritarian regime china is not an exception.
