it's about time.
there will be initial grousing and i will be one of the folks hit hardest (android, 2 laptops, iPad, and PC) but i forgive Google because they made their browser system agnostic and my bookmarks and PW's work effortlessly across devices. which is probably why two-step is so necessary.

I highly recommend people use an app authenticator and not SMS for 2fa.

None of this is for the "safety of your account/data", and never will be.

I'm all for security but do we really want all these big companies to actually have your phone number now as well as everything else they already know about you?
Call me cynical but there is nothing they want more than to verify their anonymous users identities with a much harder to fake phone account which they can verify.
Makes user data much more valuable to these companies - A billion anon accounts vs a billion verified with phone numbers from carriers accounts....

Don't use a mobile telephone... does this mean I am being locked out from my email?

I think you can set it to work with Authenticators available on desktop like WinOTP, WinAuth or Authy. I'd recommand Authy.
