is this like doing innovation for innovation sort of thing. Not calling it innovation, but doing stuff that really is doing stuff for doing stuff.

It's a separate product so I don't get why people are upset about it. I also think google is pretty smart in experimenting and offering competing products within its own company. It's the reason why it's innovating so fast. Even if Inbox fails, they can take things they learned from it and apply it to future products or already existing ones.

I agree with you 100% I tried the app out for a little while yesterday. Didn't like it at all and switched back to the Gmail app.

I don't understand, what is the logic behind not improving? Horse and Buggy was perfect for a lot of people, can you imagine if everyone said "stop trying to improve this with the car" or "stop trying to improve horses with the wheel" or "stop trying to improve hand paintings with writing" ? It makes no sense to me. It's a separate product with a different set of design goals all aimed at improving the experience of mail. What exactly is the negative here? It's not like Google has limited resources to throw at these problems or that Gmail somehow suffers from this being developed, so why not do it? Like I don't even understand the statement that it "works perfectly the way it is". Seriously? Gmail is the pinnacle of email clients and literally nothing can be done to improve it? I highly doubt that.

Well there are uses for everything. For example cars made a lot of sense, especially in cities - quieter (horseshoes made a lot of freaking noise), there was poop everywhere, they died on the streets (and there were so many of them), occasional horses breaking free or getting scared etc.
