Using Google Drive for a while now, seems like an interesting addition. So lets see 🙂

Intelligence agencies are going to love this.

Entire PC backup? 1 TB? My desktop PC has 8 TB and my HTPC capacity is some TB north 30. It will be less expensive to FEDEX all my harddisks to the NSA directly from my country! 😀

I would not like to try and backup my PC with my 1 meg upload speed. lol

Isn't that what second hardrives are for?

Ill stick to Acronis True Image, which runs every friday. Auto backs up to an internal 2,5" 1TB HDD, and every 2-3 weeks i manually drop those on a 1TB USB 3.0 HDD 🙂

First thing that comes to mind is the intelligence agencies scanning it all.

Every Friday. Isnt that a bit heavy on the HDDs and causing early wear and tear?

Each backup is only 70GB, so i doubt that's gonna hurt it much. I also don't leave my HDDs running, they spin down after 10 minutes.

All the people concerned about the private data: A) nobody cares about your data B) When they do care about you, they already have all the data in any case regardless of your system (looking at your tinfoil win7 users) C) As long as you don't do anything over the edge, they won't care Yup.

If they don't care... ask yourself one question. Why do they try so hard to get our data?

Id rather have an NAS as my backup device vs the cloud because if the sever goes down then you have no access to your data. With an NAS if one harddrive fails then all you do is replace the harddrive.

Its on cloud. No need to carry second HDD around. Could be good if you want to sync drive among multiple PCs. And obviously have fiber connection.

haha, the the congress just passed new laws to allow more of our info to be shared.

Why to pay when FreeFileSync exists? Clients available for Windwos / MacOS / Linux and using FireFox and Thunderbird entire system can be synced more or less seamlessly. Of course to sync to mobile mounting these driver is required and process is done from desktop OS. Cheaper and safer alternative then relying on corporate giant that do what governments tells them to do (via "law" of course).

Then that is an on site backup which is nothing close to the quality of having a cloud backup. What happens if there's a surge, fire, etc.? Also, for all the tin foil people, o one cares about your porn.

Yeah...Let's not turn this into a conspiracy thread... I already use Google Drive to backup pictures and files at work, but we're also on a paid subscription with Google so files are a little bit more protected at least!

Everyone get your tin foil hats out!!! But seriously no one has time to search through what would most likely be petabytes of data, that would be insane. i'm more worried about how long it would take to upload that much data! typically in the UK we have around 10-20mb/s upload. Sounds lovely i guess if you have the upload speed. But surely having something like an external hard drive, or flash drive or hot swap bays would be cheaper and more effective right? at least when we are talking about this amount of size.

Then what happens if the cloud goes down for a while and you need your data asap then it is good to have an on site copy as well.

What's stopping people from maintaining an additional backup offsite? What if Google's servers explode? There's no perfect solution.

Can't say I get it. You'll end up spending more than a couple drives would cost after a year.
