Hilbert there's a error one page 2 that you should correct because it will confuse people. Here's the wwrong text: Yup, we'll be testing the OC mode alright, and holy momma that is a grand tweak straight out of the box alright! The memory has been kept reference at 7.0 GHz (effective data-rate) on its 256-bit wide memory bus of 4GB GDDR5 memory. Obviously it's a 384- bit wide bus of 6GB GDDR5 memory, it's not a GTX 980 😉 Otherwise great review 🙂

Sounds like the OC isn't 100% stable. It sometimes takes a while for the OC to wreak havoc. All it needs is for there to be a "hiccup" at one point, and thats it. So far my 290 on water has virtually no headroom. +100/+100 core/mem. still playing with the OC occassionally. On Topic : This is one beast of a card ! Thoroughly beating a Titan X is no small feat.
I've tried to narrow down the problem but I haven't had much luck. It's not the temps or the power/temp limit and it happens with and without extra voltage. The only thing I can think of that I haven't tried is forcing voltage or tweaking the BIOS voltage settings and I don't think either of those are worth the 10% I'd gain. Gigabyte wanted me to RMA the card but I'm not going to bother unless I have trouble with my new monitor arriving today. On past cards I was able to squeeze 20 - 30% out of them. Maybe I'm expecting too much from an already OC'd card but, at least I can squeeze a little more than 10% core and +500 on memory :P. Knowing the x80ti cards are around the corner after a Titan release I have to wonder why some people buy a Titan.

When it comes to DSR, does anybody else think that the 2880x1620 resolution (with 25% DSR smoothness) is simply awesome? I swear it's the sweet spot for my 970SLI setup in every game out there, looks almost as good as 4K, but also allows for some nice AA. It would be the best resolution for an almost guaranteed 60fps in every game at max settings for the 980TI and adding a second one would allow for full 4K. If you haven't tried 1620p, you should.

REMOVED -> Seriously ? Although this is besides the point that it's a great review of the Gigabyte version. Eagerly awaiting reviews of the custom ASUS ans MSI cards.
Off Topic : I did see it, and read it. There should be a reason why it was removed, like when you edit a post. Ninja editing is not transparent. Edit - The main article no longer says anything about an exclusive, so you have that as consolation. Kudos to Hilbert for making the change. There should still be an "edited for....." though at the bottom of the post. Not sure if thats a prob with vBulletin of whichever thing is used. End of off Topic.

I def don't have power or temp limits, but if I leave the voltage at stock, I get horizontal stripes dancing across the screen, and with +50mV its fine. I have it set at +137mV for the +100/+100 setting. I can go up to +200mV with the Trixxx software, but i also blackscreen well before that. Luck of the draw I suppose.

Spot on. But until I'm on 100k/year, I'll be picking the 980ti every day. Wayne Rooney would have 3 Titan X in his rig, if he was a PC gamer though, no doubt.

You're almost guaranteed a good overclocker though aren't you ? These are the best chips, thats why they sell for a premium. There's always some headroom, and with Nvidia, usually quite a bit.

On air, you'll see both 980ti and TX peak at about the same overclock. I'm yet to see a TX running away when it comes to overclocking. Some of the premium 980ti will overclock really good, while run cooler and quieter on air.

That's what I also read from his post, he seems butthurt this Gigabyte one may be better after all than the ASUS counterpart (which we don't really know), but still, that we read from your post. Rofl. 😀 Why are you even talking about an ASUS card that "supposedly'" has more robust components in a gigabyte topic, wtf? 😀
Its a GPU topic so I'm talking about GPU's and comparing the one in the review with others from other vendors. Also ... not butthurt one bit since I'll likely buy the ASUS anyway since it looks better (in my oppinion) since performance is probably identical.
I dare to say you have a bit of a brand preference 😉 That's ok ! You can discuss wide PCBs etc all you want, but the truth is that it often only helps for sub-zero cooling etc whereas air- and liquid cooling pretty much tops out the same for most brands overclocking and lifespan wise. These GBT cards run at 70 Degrees C, heat is not an issue (aside from the ventilation you need inside the PC).
Dunno about that brand preference thing ... I do own a few ASUS products but thats just because at the time they were the best on offer ... as for EVGA, I've never owned any EVGA products but the olverbuilt Classified GPU's are just impressive even if they are wasted on air cooling. The GPU's I've owned are MSI 275/460/570(all of them TwinFrozr editions) and now ASUS 780(DirectCU2) so I'm more of an MSI fan from my GPU purchases xD The only reason I rly like them better has to be the extended PCB's that just make them look larger and more impressive cause I sell my GPU's in less than 1.5-2 years and buy new ones ... even the warranty is still there when I sell them so longevity doesen't actually affect me and OC is mostly determined by the GPU lottery than the build quality of the other components.

That's not why they sell for a premium, they're just moneyhoggers lol.. nvidia knows stupid people will buy them so that's what they do, they put em on sale and they get sold.

But this time round at least the Titan X has a full complement of shaders, whereas the 980Ti doesn't. So at equal clocks, they are the better chips. If there had been a 6GB version, it would have sold like hot cakes. 🙂

I'm a little confused on the overclock.. You overclocked it using MSI Afterburner but you "have to" use the horrid Gigabyte OC Guru software to OC...?

Sorry I'm confused, you make it sound like a Titan ever launched with less shaders than the card below it. Titan ALWAYS had the most shaders out of all the "gaming" nVidia gpus on launch. Still, 980ti being £250 cheaper than the TX, it's really a no brainer. Clock for clock, be it stock or overclocked, the difference is negligible. Then there is 3rd party 980ti that will simply outperform the TX. Fact. For £250 less.

No, the card can run in two modes (well actually three as there is an ECO mode as well). If you like to run the default highest Gigabyte tweak (which i assume you want) then OC Guru needs to be enabled (Lol I'm continuously writing OC Guru3D automatically). For our own overclock we disable OC Guru, then the clocks divert back to default 1152/1241 MHz and from there on use AB to tweak to the numbers we reached for another 10% premium in perf.

Yeah that is in my .plan however the upcoming week or two three will be busy with the AMD stuff. But likely end of the month and once I receive a third card I'll look into a 3-way SLI article.
