Great review as always! I was wondering if you could get your hands on 2 of those 960 4GB to try higher resolution where in theory memory matters more.

Hi. There is a typo in the first shadows of mordor graphic. You compared 980vs960 :P

Ah, thanks fixed.

Though graphs don't resemble anything like stuttering, to me, it really doesn't seem like the 2GB version is a whole lot worse considering the price difference. If I were to perform upgrades every other year and intended to use 1080p for a while, I think these GPUs would be fantastic. I'm definitely interested in seeing SLi performance though. It's roughly half the performance for roughly half the price of a GTX 980. According to the graphs, the 980 isn't always double-performance, so I think a couple of 960s could be a very economical way to get roughly equal performance, especially since you don't have to pay for both at the same time.

Great review as usual, always a pleasure to read through them and see the gradual GPU ( and other hardware ) advancements. Small question though, I've noticed some reviews feature Dragon Age Inquisition as a performance baseline, while others ( like this one ) does not. How come?

Was going to suggest the same thing. These in SLI might be enough to actually show an actual advantage in 4GB configuration vs the 2GB version, and at a lower price point than most GTX980's. The low memory bandwidth will of course be a handicap, but would be interesting to see by just how much.

While it offers the most excellent cooling performance (FLIR imaging FTW!) I think Windforce 3X is an overkill. It doesn't even fit in most budget gaming cases where 960 is most likely to appear. They're just getting lazy, slapping this huge thing on a PCB that can otherwise be made to fit into mITX.

Is it REAL 4Gb, or this hybrid crap us 970's got.
Straight up 4gb.

How does the GTX 960 compare to my GTX 660 Ti? Or would there be no logical reason to get an GTX 960?

Imo the price premium for the gains just are not worth it, ide still like to see sli results as thats where 4gb might make sense.

Marginal performance difference in a few games, no performance difference in others. If you really want an upgrade, aim higher.

.....(sorry for double post)

I think two of them on SLI will be a good next review Guru3d team.

Then maybe it would be better for you to sell your "crappy" 970 and buy two of these for SLI..

This has got to be the biggest 960 out there. Yea the design keeps the cooling to a max but its a Maxwell 960, does it really need all that cooling? Unless it's really cheap the whole thing is overkill for that series of card.

Thanks very much for this review. Its been very helpful. I am looking to upgrade my GTX 660, mainly so I can give it to my sister for use in her computer. I'm very happy with the 660, and would keep it otherwise. It plays FarCry 4 with most everything on high, which looks and plays great. I was wondering what difference a 4 gig card would make at 1080, the resolution I game at, and I can see it makes virtually none. So I will save for a 2 gig GTX 960 and save the extra 40 dollars for something else. Thanks again for an informative review, the first such one I have seen about the GTX 960 4 gb cards on the web.

I think it's worth paying the extra for the 4GB version. Sure, at the moment there's only a few games that benefit a 960 having 4GB (Titanfall, Wolfenstein New Order, the other one listed in this review that I can't remember, etc), but in the near future there will be more that will have an increased VRAM requirement - and besides you can always add a second 4GB 960 further down the line, and in that situation you for definate want 4GB SLI in comparison to 2GB SLI. 2GB SLI will be close on useless in the near future (and not particularly good in the present even!).

purchased! Just purchased the card off newegg (found out no returns after). Was disappointed. Temperature hitting 79 degrees. Thought buying this card would be great for taking down temps in case to be able to comfortably overclock processor. Now replacing case fans with nocturas. Will post again.

Why did you buy the 4gb version. Why.

Of all the games reviewed only Mordor is known to be a vram eater, and that is during actual gameplay. Still these line of cards remain extremely disappointing for many, if amd new mid range cards don´t render the 960 obsolete I think they´re back at dirty fixing. It´s already fishy that nvidia didn´t want to crush the 285.

Go for an RMA, these cards are among the most silent and cold ones we've ever tested.
