Hilbert, I would like to ask something, if you can ever do this particular benchmark at a given time in the future: I notice the 3 way scaling ain't great and I probably see the reason why, aint putting enough stress to it see real good scaling, To a certain degree? Yes, but Try this and more then likely you will see BIG difference between the 3x gpu scaling. Usually nvidia inspector helps tons when comes to gpu scaling, to a degree. Within nvidia inspector, try this: Use the Infamous Sonic 3d all star racing hex code: antialiasing compatibility: 0x00411245 Then to, Antialiasing - setting: 32xS [Combined: 2x2 SS + 8x MS] + other settings mentioned below: Antialiasing - Transparency Multisampling - Enabled Antialiasing - Transparency Supersampling = 8x Sparse Grid Supersampling If the game has aa then under antialiasing - mode = (Enhance the Application settings). Some games does not work with application settings turned on, therefore, have to turn off aa within the game then under aa mode = (Override any application settings). Try 2560X1600 and to 4k resolution with the above settings, guaranteed, you will be out of frame buffer, especially @ 4k, 4gb vram at this incredible intense setting aint enough, especially when everything is maxed out in the game. 3X scaling, I think will be alot more better then what the review has given if above setting is used, but non the less, great review as always. I would love to see heat differences, oh my, I do know, with this sick intense aa settings, heat comes out like you all wouldn't imagine. LOL, it buries my overclocked gtx 690 with 3dmark06 @ maxed settings @ 1920X1200 resolution, If you all dont trust me, lol, do it for yourself, try 3dmark 06, everything maxed out @ 1920X1200 resolution, then under nvidia inspector aa (Enhance the application settings), then use the above mentioned aa settings. Absolutely INSANE... I wouldn't even attempt @ 4k with today's games, oh my. 🙂!! Once you have tried this setting, you all will never go back, even @ 1920X1200 resolution, it looks absolutely SICK!!!, Everything is basically flicker free, no matter the distance, basically near perfect image quality, 🙂 Basically in other words, with today's games and with today's resolution with today's gpu's, with the above mentioned settings, it would basically devour it, completely, but nontheless, I would love to see a X3 980 gtx sli with this setting, 🙂.

This review has me holding tight for now waiting to see what comes next a higher end card from nvidia or the classy/lightning. Still concerned about the frame drops.

Remember 2x980s will beat 3x970's I think. I seen it somewhere..

Two classy/lightnings under water are still my plan.

I also wonder how the benchmarks in games are performed. For example the Battlefield 4 time demo, do you control the player yourself each time or is there some prerecorded demo you can replay?
There is a performance test feature when you start up the game on the bottom of the video graphics options menu, but I always wondered if there is some proper benchmark or does he do the same playthrough of some singleplayer mission over and over again, that can get tedious in a short while though 🙂
Aah, a quick word on AMD Gaming Evolved titles. Its not that I choose these deliberately, but most triple A titles have AMD plastered all over them these days. Secondly, I try to use scripted benchmarks as much as I can for the best measurements. So that's Metro, Hitman, Tomb Raider, BioShock, Thief and then the two 3DMark's already. I would like to exclude it, but have to BF4 as everybody wants to see the results, I throw in MOH, Crysis 3 and Metro to balance things a little. I ditched Ubisoft titles for their DRM issues and the impossible to use UbiPlay. EA / Origin is getting on my nerves as well (an update each day these days) but a necessity. next to that I try and use as much Steam titles as I can use the games on multiple machines, that saves this office a lot of cash opposed to re-purchasing the game for every test system. I will look out for a couple of pre-NV games as well, but I just hate Batman, I purchased Titanfall but that was online only ... well and so on. AMD is all over the AAA games, NVIDIA not that much. So the Gaming Evolved titles are not a deliberate choice, it's just the most popular AAA games that people use + they need have ability to be scripted or measured with FRAPS/FCAT in a fast enough session (benchmarking takes a lot of time).
Ok thanks for the answer but what about the id tech 5 engine games like rage, wolfensten the new order or the upcoming evil within. Is the reason why you don't use these games for benchmarking because they have the 60 fps lock?

What framedrops did you have in mind? The ones in the tomb raider game? Well I had plenty of fps drops when I played the game with my 670 gtx sli setup...the game is just optimized better for the amd dedicated graphic cards I guess.

Nice review, but I'm still leaning towards the 970's purely for the monetary value of them, kind of reminds me of the 9000 series which were a more refined 8000 with better power/cooling. Oh the glorious 9600GT's price performance era is making a return 😀

In today's review we test GeForce GTX 980 in a 2-way and 3-way SLI. We'll FLIR them, Overclock them, look at Ultra HD performance as well as a micro stuttering analysis with the help of FCAT. Will t... GeForce GTX 980 2 and 3-way SLI review
The Radeon 7790 or the Geforce 580 still conquering....DX11.1 or Mantle is or was just for new techs "GAMEREADY" [no playable games on the shelves according to the new API specifications) -ITS NOT ABOUT POOR GAME DEVELOPERS ..... its controversy Thats why the advent of GPU market graph is declining..... ------------------------------- we dnt need to be richer to bath oneself ------------------------------ THE NEXT REPLY TO THIS WILL BE ACCORDING TO THE "FACT' ABOVE = BAD HABITS ------------------------------

No I'm referring to the FCAT spikes to 0ms they represent a dropped/skipped frame enough of them within a second can be seen as micro-stutter. I hope this is just a driver issue as these are the first Maxwell based cards that have supported SLI. Most people will not see them as they game at 60Hz but I play at 100Hz so it may be noticeable. http://www.guru3d.com/index.php?ct=articles&action=file&id=12866

Not if it comes with a Titan price tag and the reference only PCB.

If there all reference cards like 690 and previous regular Titan they could hold many phases as well as integrated I2C commands which will really unlock the card on water. The datasheet will reveal all, i may just go with 2 classys myself. It depends on how i feel on the day because at 1440p the 980s are superb and with a voltage unlock they could really fly along. Also i know that EVGA are not popular on here atm but for people who own evga cards here is a warranty extended from 3 years to 5 years for free for limited time only! http://eu.evga.com/articles/00877/EVGA-GeForce-GTX-980-970-FREE-5-Years-Warranty/

These cards are great up to 1440p and prob 1600p but my cards are better in 4k probably something to do with the memory bandwidth on maxwell. My cards are a tad faster than 970 sli and around 10% or so slower than 980 sli, I am going to wait for big daddy maxwell, should be great.
