Nice review. Card itself is a bit of a letdown in my perspective. Not that it's a bad performer, Wins 980 sometimes, sometimes loses. Wins 480 sometimes, sometimes loses. But perf/w isn't close to 1080. Btw, your results for Rise of the tombraider dx12 aren't valid anymore. They seem to be mostly copied from previous results, and don't include latest patch improvements that boosted amd cards especially by huge margin. You see for example Fury X losing to 980. But with current patch it's actually faster than 980 TI @1440p. http://www.extremetech.com/gaming/231481-rise-of-the-tomb-raider-async-compute-update-improves-performance-on-amd-hardware-flat-on-maxwell But I understand it's a hell of a job to keep all benchmarks updated especially on new api's since those tittles do gain a lot of patches all the time.

Im surprised it stays so cool with this cooler. 3rd party will even cool it more.

Well, card is where it belongs in price scale. AMD480 might be better performance for price, but it comes with heat and higher electricity consumption.

Nice card if you can find it for $249. However, we must be objective here regarding dx12 performance (looking at 1080p only now); It's slower in DX12 games, except for Tomb Raider where it's significantly faster (suprising performance tbh) than RX480 and by higher margins than any of the other 3 DX12 games. This shouldn't be taken as an indication of it's DX12 performance moving forward, however, it potentially shows what GTX1060 "could" be like in Nvidia-biased DX12 games. I don't expect this to be the regular trend moving forward to 2017, however, if you judge it across all games, then, it's a great "all-rounder" and those with a nice collection of games will enjoy it's performance. As for Doom Vulkan, it absolutely should be tested, but, I think Doom needs to be patched with the Nvidia Vulkan optimisations and relevant Nvidia driver that supports those changes. As of now, the performance is skewed because it's an AMD tuned version of Vulkan. It also has problems that need ironing-out for both vendors. It should be considered beta until it's feature complete. It'll be interesting one to look out for though.

And 4gb 480 at 199. I envy us prices 239 for 480 8gb. And 249 for 1060. All good buys. Well ok reference 480 cooler is simply ****

Hardocp quote "Here the AMD Radeon RX 480 is 32% faster than the GeForce GTX 1060 running "Ultra" settings and "Nightmare" settings at 1080p under the Vulkan API". I saw similiar difference in some YT reviews.
Doom is just a single game, it pulls ahead in many others. And as Hillbert said, it's still Beta.

OK, but, if we take the minimum at 1440p, it's no contest.

I don't believe the latest patch for Tomb Raider was used. Regarding Vulkan, it might be missing a few features such as ASYNC support for NVIDIA (drivers might the cause) but it's very stable and graphically the same. I don't consider it to be beta.

Edit. Nevermind, Doom results at Vulkan were already added. Why these results for new low level API's are important is rather simple. When buying budget card especially, you're thinking of investment for the new couple of years. Right now we are living time period where games made with these new api's are starting to come, and I personally would put more focus on these tests , instead of traditional dx11 tittles. This is ofc my personal oppinnion and you can disagree as much as you want with it. Only important factor for me personally under dx11 is, if the game is running reasonably well enough.

Is there a list with vulcan titles that are coming ? Seems Doom is already running at high enough frames , nice if you have a really low end card not this. Talos principle is also not really a good example.

Mr Hilbert where is Doom Vulkan test? 🙂 OGL not matter now, obsolete,Vulkan is the future. We know nvidia runing well on OGL,but on Vulkan not so good vs R9-RX.

If I had to pick the RX 480 4GB, 8GB, or the GTX 1060, I'd go for the 480 4GB. These GPUs are primarily focused on mainstream, which is HD resolutions (1080p). To my knowledge, the 480 4GB has faster memory than the 8GB model while also costing less (and it wouldn't surprise me if it uses a little less power too). Assuming that offers maybe 3FPS more on average, that puts the 480 4GB GPU as the most competitive overall. However, I would rather have the 1060 than the 480 8GB.

Neah,I think as usual its not good to mess with nvidia after they deliver a free cards.Imo. 🙂 Gtx 1060 has no SLI and Low-level API performance is concerning.
