I got the exact same impression. I was thinking "OK, why would they put CPU-oriented RAM on a GPU. And how the hell were they able to fit an SSD on the card as well and still have it only take up a single slot? Gotta admit, that would make an impressive gaming card, though. All they need to do is add a SoundBlaster and ethernet to it and its a whoel gaming machine.

I agree, I thought they are doing the same thing as AMD, releasing a card with an integrated SSD. --- Title should say: "Galax releasing 3 new products: A single slot 1070, PCI-e m2 SSD and new DDR4 memory." (or something similar)

No need for Soundblaster when you've got HDMI/DP audio. What it needs instead are input controls, and then you've got enough hardware for a gaming machine. It's an interesting thought though - these days, GPUs are easily the most important part of gaming rigs. We're slowly reaching a point where just about everything the CPU does could (in theory) be replaced by the GPU and the game would still play just fine. I figure any time a process is performed less efficiently on the GPU would be completely overshadowed by the efficiency increase of doing everything on one chip. Vulkan, DX12, and these on-board SSDs are a potential step forward in eliminating the need for CPUs in games. Perhaps one day GPUs will do 99% of the work, where the only purpose of the CPU is to handle basic peripherals, such as input devices, speakers, networking, the OS, and storage of game data. But otherwise, the CPU wouldn't do anything in-game. Kind of interesting to think about, since around 20 years ago, a GPU was nothing more than just an output device that slightly reduced CPU load.

Wow, 1070 performance in a single slot with normal height (from PCIe to top of the card)? Impressive. Would have expected that from AMD's vendors tbh.

I think some in 10 years we won't have dedicated video cards. With HBM and integrated video and other controllers GPU turns to be a fully integrated SoC. So instead we will have an additional GPU socket on motherboards and GPU power connectors. Modern games will be scaled through integrated GPU, while ancient, by then, DX11- games will work with integrated GPU only. By then integrated GPUs could reach 5-7 TFLOPS which would be enough to play ancient games on 1080p or 2160p.

Completely agreed with your opinion that in the future the GPU will do almost all the processing that CPU does today. I think that one day the CPU and the GPU will be one powerful synthesis of two parts with great processing power. By the time the GPU will be even more important than the CPU is, the SoC are the proof for this.

Is possible put a M.2 SSD slot on a Graphics Card with a PCIE HUB then the M.2 controller could have one or two DDR4 chips for caché lol

Actually, you are only partially correct. While the first video output devices for PC's were called "Graphics Adapters" (Color G.A., up to Video G.A. or Super Video G.A.) were not doing ANY processing at all, the first PC card with Fixed-Function 2D processing was ... an amazingly 27 years ago ! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S3_Graphics S3 911, first ever accelerator, was capable of drawing lines and fill surfaces onto the video memory without using the CPU. Which was AWESOME. Made Windows 3.11 feel smooth 🙂 3D capabilities came a bit later, cca. 1995 and they were definitely doing a lot of calculations on their own (geometry and texture fill). Definitely MUCH more than a "video output device" 🙂 Real 3D games like Descent 2 or MechWarrior looked amazing for that time.

One thing bothers me - placing NAND right next to GPU will make it very hot. Isn't TLC NAND is vulnerable to high temperatures?

Honestly, I really miss those powerful single slot designed cards. Nowadays is like, manufacturers doesn't care about the size and weight, causing some gpu setup to sag and may even damage pci-e if not reinforced. Mini versions of gpu is quite seldom too...
