Freesync over HDMI 2.0 is supported since the very first Freesync monitors came out March 2015, and GPUs support it since Nov-Dec of the same year (2015)

I sure hope not. I'm looking at this very issue with my receiver being older than my new television and I have to pass everything to the tv just so I can pass audio through an optical cable to my receiver! Once I upgrade the receiver I'll be alright, but with this now stated do I need to wait for something that is going to allow this kind of "tech.....!?!"

If your AVR supports HDMI2.0 then it will pass through.

At first I thought they were just trying to phase the original xbox one out, but now I'm reading the original Xbox one doesn't have HDMI 2.0. So anyone out there wondering why the original One didn't get this, it lacks HDMI 2.0.

Because when the XBox One was being designed (same with PS4) 4K wasn't a thing nor was HDMI2.0. HDMI 2.0 was finalized Sep 4, 2013 PS4 and Xbone were released Nov 2013 No way they had time to add in they had been building stock for at least 6 months prior to launch.

Because 2.0 wasn't out... Also 1080p 60fps Freesync is supported by HDMI 1.4a or later, something Xbox One has. 2.0 is needed for 1440 & 4K gaming only.

I managed to enable FreeSync over HDMI 1.4 on my Qnix back when I had 290X CF @ 1440p ~56-58Hz. HDMI 2.0 is just there for the bandwidth.

Technically, not true, xbox one and HDMI 2.0 came out the same year, and HDMI 2.0 came out before Xbox one, they COULD have worked with HDMI to make sure HDMI 2.0 was in their console, both would have benefited. That being said, microsoft was not really caring about 4K anything when xbox one originally released.

Yes and no. HDMI2.0 released 2 months prior to XBone. XBone had to be finalized well before release in order to build stock. So production would have started months before HDMI2.0 was "finalized". For all we know both the (sony) PS4 and (m$) XBone had contacted HDMI about upcoming revisions and put preliminary hardware in place but neither were in the end what was required in final production of HDMI2.0.

You don't need 2.0 for freesync. Monitors with HDMI 1.2+ support freesync; most 1080P 144hz monitors of today are 1.4/1.4a(which xbox/ps4 supports). They could easily add support but it'll be an artificial limitation to distinguish their product lines.

Question is, will they detect high refresh rates and drive the monitor at the highest one when freesync is enabled to get all the benefits from it? (With VRR, 60FPS @ 144Hz for example is way better than 60FPS @ 60Hz.)
